while Peter dodges the NACS question and pushes for more adoption of the "L2 charge where you sleep" strategy he also hits a few interesting points:
  • they are targeting a $50k range car eventually; mentions mid- to late decade time frame
  • they would "love to be able to license" their tech for others to make at scale. i also would love to see their motor get high volume production; that thing is amazing.
  • i think he misspoke in the question about the need for mining and mineral extraction issue and he meant "vehicle efficiency" instead of "battery efficiency".
  • total vehicle efficiency is improving and they have a 6 mi/kWh target in mind in order to reduce overall battery pack size. i disagree with his 150 mile range target but considering his cars are extreme in the other direction i think he's just telling a story here.
  • Lucid's current Air efficiency is around 4.74 mi/kWh; that pretty impressive and i thought it was closer to 4.
he's a good ambassador for EVs and i really hope Lucid makes it.

Lucid was criticized pretty early about building a car for the rich and not a mass market vehicle at the $50k or less price point. The thing is, people don’t understand the paradox of how expensive it is to design, source supply chains, and subsequently build factories for a high-volume vehicle. Lucid has spent a billion or two bringing the Air to market. It’ll cost Lucid probably 3-4 times that for a $50k product.

yeah, auto startups rarely make it due to the extremely high capital needs.

i think you're in the ballpark for the capital they'd need for a $50k car. i can't see how Lucid gets to the production capacity necessary.
