BTW mine was made in July 2023.

gps status
It’s ok, but free
It’d be interesting, although rather useless to us, to see what Apple uses GPS wise. How many satellites, averaging etc. What might h be more useful us to know just what the changed (in layman’s terms) in regards to their gps receiver on the iPhone 15 and/or software. There are too many folks with issues that haven’t had those issues in the past. And as far as we know Ford hasn’t changed a thing related to GPS.

There are the tear-down sites that take new machines apart to see what’s inside. They might have some info about the GPS chip(s). I guess it’s time to head off to Google to find one.

Didn’t find anything except sites talking about the India navigation system that Apple now has. But I did find an article saying it’s not just the MME that is having problems. A bunch of others are too. So that tells me it’s an Apple issue, software or hardware or both.

I think it's probably them derating the number of locked sats because otherwise the GPS module might melt. To me it looks like it yo-yo's about 30% accuracy.

I’d not bet against that hypothesis. I’m back to using native nav virtually exclusively. Besides, it pronounces Hawaiian street names far better than Siri when I have the audio on. :)

But Siri does a better job than my ex wife did for sure!

I have a theory that this started after they rolled out offline map support. I notice sometimes the map switches to offline map even though I have cell coverage so the back and forth between offline and online might send the gps haywire. Just a theory at this point though…

Mine went crazy on the iPhone 14 Pro before they rolled that out in beta.

Better theory than mine, which was Elon Musk miniaturized and multiplied himself in an experimental transporter beam accident then entered all our phones and messed with the GPS software/hardware so we’d get mad and buy Tesla’s. We’re on to you Elon! Umm, I mean, yours is as good a theory as any. :)
