I hope to never use it, but I just purchased a Modern Spare after an incident in my other vehicle. One flat in the middle of nowhere West Virginia took me from $600 seems like a lot for spare tire kit to, “take my money.”

The purchasing experience is excellent and the printable instructions are a nice touch. Thanks everyone who posted about it and shared stowing advice.

i just can't pony up that much for the spare. (pun intended) Got a plug and patch kit and hope that unlike my ID4 tire issue (sidewall hit something on the roadd at 75mph and blew a hole through it) if i have an issue the plug and patch kit will get me to where i need to get to..

$600?! Good Lord has the price gone up. I think it was less than half of that a couple years ago for the kit. I bought the tire alone and got some used Porsche jack off eBay.

It works great if you have cell signal.
And the lack thereof is why I got a Garmin satellite communicator a few years ago on sale at REI for the winter ski trips to WV! And even if you had a cell signal you could wait a veryyyyy long time for road service on a road up in the Monongahela national forest. The modern spare is “sleep insurance” even if you never use it. If you don’t have a satellite communicator you might consider shopping for one.

Sorry if I missed it, but where did you get the spare? I had a flat tire that made for a bad morning not too long ago, so I've been considering a spare for my car.

Interesting. How well does it fit in the trunk? Could send us a picture?

It doesn't fit at all. I keep mine on the right. On the left there's barely room to slide in a case of beer bottles. There's just enough room above it to fit a medium sized cooler below the cargo cover.

agree. There are posts showing the approach: you stuff it under the false floor with the tie downs. I’ve not tried it yet, however.

wish list… make a way to secure a spare tire in the trunk. Like, maybe there’s an attachment to secure it vertically, bolting it to the side of the trunk.

My wife just said this to me! We get out in it, and we’re not so young.

Driving past Green Bank crazy. The observatory pops up out of nowhere and the literal radio silence is cool. With a spare 🤓.

Now, @rreddy3, what about some DCFC in Moorefield 😂. I wrote Kerns to see if they would host one! Er… radio silence.

I guess I don’t understand the obsession some have with having a spare. I have driven cars since the early 70s. In all those years I have never had occasion to use a spare tire.

In over 40 years of driving, I have needed the spare for every car I have owned, and the nature of the failure was not something fix-a-flat was going to help with. These were on normal road trips on normal roads. Also, I regularly find myself in locations with no cell service.

I've used a spare on other vehicles five times in the past 20 years. Admittedly three of those were on dirt roads.

Moorefield would be great. It’s just about half way to Snowshoe from where I live in Centreville. It’s also a good spot to top up on the way to the Canaan Valley. Some more charging at Snowshoe or DCFC at Cass wouldn’t hurt my feelings either! But I’m not going to hold my breath for any of it to happen!
