Hey all

I'm coming to the LA area next month and need to rent a car. Budget had some good rates and EV was actually cheaper that ICE. I called the local office (Burbank on Olive) and had a nice chat with the manager. After some conversation the change of me getting a Mach E was pretty good.
I did some poking around and I actually saw some chargers at .69 KWHR. Now I’m thinking it maybe cheaper for ICE

Thoughts?

I think for fuel expense, a hybrid will be cheaper than using public charging for an EV in Los Angeles, but you also said the EV is cheaper to rent.

More importantly than that, I would only do it if you plan on visiting non-Electrify America stations. All the EA stations in LA almost always have a line, even in the middle of the night because so many brands have included free charging. It's actually pretty annoying. If you've located non-EA chargers you can use, go for it, but between having to wait in EA lines versus using gas, I would 100% get the ICE for a trip to LA.

LA is a pretty big market. Lots of options. Off peak charging is your best bet. L2 is also a good option. Check PlugShare and see what’s in your area. Plus, gas is pretty high in the LA area. A hotel with charging is an option also. My personal calculation is that the break even point is around .75/kWh.
