I have done multiple diminished value claims. Let me tell you, it is a complete negotiation. Who the insurance carrier is plays way bigger role. Some will deny out right. Some will low ball. Some will be fair. The time frame or market value does not really matter. Obtain a diminished value report from an online appraiser as a start point and negotiate with the insurance company. My MME was rear ended. Diminished value appraised 8.3K drop in value, insurance offered 5K. I took it. It is always a negotiation, with the ultimate solution being suing the other driver under tort law and dragging the insurance into it. But it is rarely worth it to sue unless the other side is playing real hard ball. so negotiate a fair dollar and be done with it.

Thanks for the advice. I am dealing with a similar situation with Travelers as the at-fault party's insurance company. Can you tell me the specific online appraiser you used? In my initial conversations with Travelers they did not sound too sympathetic to diminished value claims.

Many of the online appraisal services will work. All they do is comparison analysis with sold vehicles/trade in quotes to establish value loss. Nothing special, just to establish a dollar amount for negotiation. You need them mostly for counter offer advices after being low balled or rejected by the insurance company. Like threaten to report to the state insurance board or something. They will provide you with standard letters to send to the insurance company.

I have also done a report myself with trade in quote analysis for a minor accident and got $$ back. But it is only because I know the company accepts diminished value claim. Didn't want the appraisal fee eating my profit.
