Ford Mustang Mach-E Mach E GT and Tesla Model Y both here 193BA21C-C12D-41C8-9D8F-4E1770701A6B

I’m finally feeling better, been under the weather all week. This afternoon I was able to pickup my 21 Mach E GT. I still have the 22 Model Y Dual Motor here for the weekend.

Just thought I’d throw out if anyone has any oddball questions that haven’t been answered elsewhere or need a direct comparison / measurement on something, ask away and I’ll try to get it done.

how does the ride quality compare?
To preface, I drove the GT for 5/6 months before it went in the shop. Drove the MY for the last 2 months daily.

I’ll answer your question somewhere in this ramble I hope.

The Model Y drives “smoother” but not necessarily better. It takes bumps a little better, but it’s not at all exciting to drive. I would 100% pick the GT. If I had my druthers, I would pick the GT with MagneRide (non-PE because the seat bolsters don‘t work on my frame). I don’t prefer the seats in the MY either. They are warm and puffy, but feel like thick pleather. They are certainly more comfortable that previous Tesla seats, and they are definitely fine. Just nothing special. That’s my overall impression of the MY….”that’s it?” It’s certainly not 75k+ territory.

The MY makes me feel disconnected. It feels light on the road, seems to move with the wind easier, much louder, much hotter on the inside. The windows do not seem to be UV coated anywhere near the GT. Your face and legs cook in that car without additional tint. If you like a softer ride but much more disconnected, you’ll like the MY. If you like a more stable, sturdy ride, you’ll like the MME.

Having made Several 300 miles trips with it, I wasn’t impressed with the GOM either. It flat out exaggerates. Sometimes even a 26 mile trip would drop 60-70 miles of range. And the assisted driving is nowhere near as good as BlueCruise. It’s mean-spirited, always making very loud beeps and boops at you, shuts off if you want to change lanes. BC is in many ways much more graceful and forgiving. It truly is a co-pilot that assists you, let‘s you take control, then takes it back from you in concerted movements. The MY wants you to constantly apply torque to the wheel, but it’s not very sensitive. You have to sometimes fight it to get it to recognize your hands-on, and then half the time when you do it disengages the auto-steer. It feels like Elon Musk’s personality was put into the car haha.. And Why on earth would I want to hold my hands up to the steering wheel and force move it constantly? One of the most exhausting parts of driving is the hands on the wheel. MME is far more sensitive to steering torque, and hands-free is great on long stretches. That Munro video is way out of date.

The MME is far from perfect, but I can’t believe anyone who had the opportunity to drive both for 30 days each would pick the MY. Where the MY excels is the screen / speed of interface and the amount of storage below the hatch floor. Ford seriously needs to catch up on this interface. It’s utterly embarrassing that a brand new car stutters for 30-45 seconds on startup when a 5 year old tesla is iPad-Pro-fast.

I was genuinely worried leading up to the Y that I would end up preferring it and feel like I made a mistake. Being as objective as I can, I think I made the right choice. The MY makes me a little worried for my CyberTruck pre-order. I want this thing to feel right. Feel like a truck. That’s a huge part of why the F-150 is so popular. It drives wonderfully but feels like a truck.

It’s bad. I got it with 100 miles. The alignment is off by nearly 15 degrees to the right. The car creaks and croaks on the highway. The cabin boils, and the AC cannot keep up so it drains the battery when you’re not in it trying to keep the vehicle cool. The paint is every bit as low quality as the MME…it’s gotta be the thinnest paint and clear coat ever made. The panels have obvious gaps. There was even foam adhesive showing below the trim by the windshield where it is not even applied correctly. They are built in a hurry and it shows.

What’s wrong with the MME paint?

Agree with the gaps as do most of the other owners I know. The rest thankfully don’t seem to be a pervasive problem.

These two EVs are more similar than different. I’ve owned 3 Model Ys and 3 different MMEs. The Y has a pretty harsh suspension that can grow tiresome on long trips or uneven roads. The GTPE Unbridled suspension is the only mode I can tolerate these days. The rest are too underdamped. Also, the MME is poorly insulated. The road noise is pretty bad. I’ve measured dB levels on my EVs and Telluride and the MME is one of the loudest over rough surfaces. High 80s whereas the Telluride stays in the 60s.

Anyhow, these $60-70K EVs need to improve. They have problematic ride quality, mediocre audio systems, and cheap interiors. My used (but new to me) BMW i4 is vastly better in all the areas and it has opened my eyes. In the same price point you have the Genesis GV60 and Cadillac Lyriq too.

My GTPE feels like a $50K car not $72K. BlueCruise is awesome and MagneRide is nice but not worth a premium over competitors. The Model Y should be $50K max also. Not worth the $65K for the base trim.

Just accepted my Model Y Performance yesterday! Haven’t had the time to drive it as it’s in the shop undergoing PPF but will definitely contribute to this post once that’s done.

These Performance EVs are ticket magnets. I blew past a merging Disney bus and with the GTPE (also MYP) acceleration you can hit 90 almost in an instant. Whisper mode is the only way I can stay under the speed limit and it’s painful to drive the GTPE in that mode.

Highly doubt it's going to feel like a truck - or look like one.
