anyone having an issue with iPhones where the compass and maps don’t work inside the car? I’ve attached a video that shows the map through CarPlay. The Ford map works fine. Any advice would be appreciated!

Yes, I’m seeing the same thing on an iPhone XS and an iPhone 12, whether the phone’s in the front or back seat or on the wireless charger. It’s intermittent but I haven’t found a consistently good position for the phone to avoid it.

I wonder if it's the treated glass? Try holding the phone up around the black area near the rear view mirror where there's no thermal treatment? Otherwise, get a new phone?? Lol

YIKES! I'm getting an iPhone 12 Pro tomorrow! It's replacing my iPhone X which hasn't given me any problems.

With Sync 3 your phone is supposed to use the cars built in GPS antenna. I assume Sync 4 is the same way. It only switches to its own internal antenna in the case of an unreliable GPS signal from Sync. I'm not sure if this is still true with wireless carplay/aa though. Just a lot of new stuff.

For some reason, I can't watch your video.

However, Ford Nav, Google Maps, Waze, and even Apple Maps know which way I'm driving. Sometimes they don't know which way the car is facing before starting to move but that's a common problem.

What is your issue? Are there features that don't work because of this? If you just want to know which way you are facing, it's on the driver display panel.

I’ll reply since I’m having the same issue. When things are working correctly, it’s just as you said, any incorrect orientation is momentary before you start driving. But when this issue is happening, the incorrect orientation is constant, so the map will track your position, but the vehicle orientation will be sideways, as if you were drifting for 30 min straight. ?

You can kind of live with that, but it becomes problematic when you’re approaching a turn and the turn is off screen because the map is showing the streets behind you.

I did some reading, and it looks like breeves is correct that the phone defers to the car’s GPS and compass when you’re using CarPlay, particularly for wireless CarPlay, when it’s apparently mandatory that the phone defer to the car, so the problem must be with the Mach E’s internal GPS/compass, but I don’t understand why the built-in navigation doesn’t have problems. On other vehicles, some people have worked around the issue by unplugging the car’s GPS antenna, but I wouldn’t know how to do that on the Mach E without tearing open the dash.

Recently I haven’t been seeing the issue when I have time for debugging, but it happens when I don’t. ?‍♂

Same issues, so much so that I stopped trying to use the maps on my iPhone at all.

My iPhone 12 Pro has worked flawlessly for me since February. Not to worry!

I haven’t had an issue. iPhone 12 Pro Max. Admittedly though, I usually use the Ford maps.
I've got an iPhone 12 Pro, and it's been on the iOS 15 beta since I've had the car (so I don't know if the iOS version affects anything here or not), but CarPlay Apple Maps navigation works perfectly well for me.

Hey, Kam, I caught in another thread that you said you don’t have a problem with your 12 Pro Max not charging? Is that still the case? I’ve found with my 12 Pro I can have the car on in the garage, get it centered, it starts charging, and I haven’t MOVED and it will still disconnect after a minute or two. I ask only because I’m thinking of getting the 13 Pro and I’m trying to decide if the Max might truly help the wireless charging issue or not. Thanks!

Mine is the 12 Pro Max. I haven’t had an issue with it stopping charging. Could be a size thing because it’s fairly snugin the left side space.

Back to the compass issue, it was acting up today and restarting Sync (hold down right seek + volume down) fixed it. I had been trying just disconnecting the phone and reconnecting, but that was hit or miss in getting it to start working.

It just does not work right.

I have went as far as putting a piece of tape across the sides and top to bottom. It started the charge and then all the sudden it just stops, phone has not moved at all. I think the iPhone sees the charge and then for whatever reason it shuts its self off from charging.

Its a little annoying only because we have that charger there and we can't use it. But that being said, I'd much rather plug in my phone if I needed juice. The only thing the wireless charging is good for is for a long trip. Its better to use that vs however much power the USBC port pushes out to the hardwire.
