The Mach E looks like a great Crossover and should be a big hit. But use the Mustang name on a Crossover? Mustang is an iconic name used since 1964. all of which have been sporty two door coupes and convertibles. Having owned 15 Mustangs since 1966 that spans all Mustang types (Except Mustang II) I am against the Mustang name used on a Crossover. Mustang is an iconic name that should not be used on anything except a two door sporty coupe or convertible. Again, I like the style of Mach E and its mecahnicals but wish you would not call it a Mustang!

No one here had anything to do with it.

The manufacturer can call their products anything they want.

Not all Mustangs were really that sporty I may add. The first ones were reskinned Falcons and drove like it too. By no means an expensive car but it was small and with a big engine could be fun. No way it handled well at all though. The later ones were improved for sure but need I remind you of the Mustang 2.

This is hurting Ford in two ways. The Mustang faithful don't like a utilitarian four door hatchback being called a Mustang no matter how quick and good the handling might be.

EV buyers don't want to be included with an iconic knuckle dragger car that has aggressive styling ques to cater to the knuckle draggers aggressive nature.

Not sure where this is going to wind up but the Select will be hard to beat on price for the content, no matter what you call it, that's for sure.

I don't think it really matters that much. Porsche is calling the high trims of its Taycan BEV "Turbo" and "Turbo S", which makes much less sense than "Mustang Mach-E", to me. My last Ford was a 1992 Ford Explorer -- a piece of junk -- and I have no buying interest in any Ford ICEVs, period, so I could care less about them. I'm here for the electrified Fords.

I really don't like the Mustang name being used on a four door suv but it's here and it's the future. I'm going to see how Ford does with the Mustang Mach E and if all goes well I'll probably buy one in 2021. And as for the Mustang II it was Iacocca's brain child and it also saved the Mustang from extinction in the emissions choked '70's.

Yes, this is certainly an iconic car:

Ford Mustang Mach-E Mustang name ac_mustangii_alt

Please leave this alone. MME does not threaten Mustang heritage, only allows it to move in a new direction. The original Mustang was built on a Falcon chassis, after all. MME is much superior to that.

As I jokingly said to a few Mustang buddies the other day, the Mustang II probably got replaced as the black sheep of the family :)

To make this name "work" in my mind, I now refer to the Mustang as coming in 3 body style configurations - coupe, convertible, crossover (aka the "Three Cs").

I also rationalize this configuration addition as similar to what the Corvette owners are going through with the front-engine to mid-engine change, although they did not add a new body style. It's enough of a change to attract new customers, maybe sway some existing customers, and alienate some customers.

The first day I saw this was a Mustang model with the pony on it, I was very disappointed. I felt betrayed. I asked myself why I was so angry and personally affronted. I felt if Ford was dismissing heritage and the accompanying loyalty and good will that comes with it.

However, if this is an evolution of the Mustang line that will keep the 2+2 cars financially viable for the future, then I am more accepting of it.

Ford's got some 'splainin' to do, in my opinion, to those of us who can't still fathom that a name is being applied to this configuration. Or maybe we should have tweeted to Ford to not only not call it a Mach 1, but skip the Mustang too :)

No disrespect meant to anyone who is excited and has no concerns with the name, of course.

I wonder about the internal politics at Ford leading up to this decision. I hope they can put the right spin on it to make it work.

Im not so worried about the Mustang followers but have concerns about EV buyers who might not want to join the Mustang club. Hopefully there will be a new segment of customers that will be enticed by it.

The thing is that whole name thing works several ways:

1. Ford doesn't have to have a major ad campaign to establish the cars name (its going to get called Mach E by the vast majority of people anyways)

2. Its generating a huge amount of interest (good and bad) among car enthusiasts/fans-Free advertising.

3. It opens up the Mustang to people who want a more practical car (well as practical as a BEV can be for some people) with performance to match the Mustang name

4. This will allow the Mustang to survive another 50 years or so-the 2 door coupe market isn't all that (even though its best selling sports coupe in the world) and maybe down the road they will share platform to allow the 2 door Mustang to survive

I have talked to several people of different age groups and most of them are curious about the Mustang Mach E and want to know more.

I imagine they will have a commercial that has both ICE Mustang and Mach E. A passing of the torch type maybe. Either that or reviewers will do something similar.

Personally, I can see why Ford is going this way to keep up with competition, but using the Mustang name is WRONG in so many ways. Its plain to see Ford has joined Mopar's ranks into turning legendary cars, and what they were, into four doors to sell their products.
I would never buy one of these things, unless I can break the tires loose, hear the rumble of the exhaust and smell the high octane fumes I'm not happy. If I want to go practical I will jump in my wife's Escape or my S10 to get groceries.
All that are drooling over this and have never, ever driven one , have to be Ford plants. What hand are you guys using? I would have more respect for Ford if they used any other name but MUSTANG. GT package is now ''trim'' OMG . At least tell me that you get a bigger battery, duel electric cables and an air system to smell like burning rubber when needed, as your head is s l o w l y going back into the headrests when you hit the pedal. Notice I didn't say hit the gas.

If you want to know why people are so passionate about the Mustang name you need to watch A Faster Horse then you'll understand.
