On my way back from Reno today I decided to take the low road through Placerville and try out the Tesla Supercharger for the first time.

I had a great experience. The charger handoff was almost instantaneous. I normally use Electrify America chargers and the handoff and charge initiation always takes at least 20 seconds on those things. I was also suprised at how friendly the Tesla owners charing in the same area were.

If this is going to be consistant across the Tesla network when it opens next year, I can't see the CCS standard staying around for much longer. At the very least it will add some real competition in the charging market.

Glad to hear you had a great experience! While I'm not sure I want CCS to die, I do think competition is a very healthy thing and hopefully the CCS networks will significantly up their game.

Hello Dan.
I am glad that you had a smooth experience at a Tesla Supercharger station.
Was this session at a station with the Majik dock connector? How did you obtain the info about Majik dock station capabilities. I do have the Tesla app but I don't get any updates of those stations. I am not logged in in the app all the time. Do I have to be logged in to get updates of the stations that have Majik dock capabilities?
I am aware also that the East Coast is lagging or doesn't have the priority the West Coast has. Most likely need to login to my Tesla account. Either way, please inform us of how the process work into finding those modified stations in the Tesla Supercharger network.

For now, to find Telsa Majik docks, you can use Plugshare to filter to show only CCS connections and only Tesla networks. There are only a few - 2 in CA and a few in NY - that's it. And I expect Tesla won't continue to roll out anymore with the sea change in the last couple of weeks to adopt their Tesla (ok, ok, "NASC") connectors as a standard.

It's a Magic Dock. No fancy "j" in the name.

Thanks.
I did though logged in to my Tesla account and access their network in my area. It was for non Tesla owners accessing their Supercharger network. Tesla, is showing what is available in certain locations but they show only one station, (#4A), that is capable of supporting CCS vehicles. I am tempting to take a ride to the closest station in my area and verify the station/dock number. I will check my Plugshare account also.

When you open the Tesla app and press the "Charge my Non-Tesla" button it filters all of the locations for you on the map in the application.

The engineering is pretty interesting on the Magic Docks. I should have taken a picture, but the CCS has the regular Tesla charge cord attached to it. When you pull the cord the Tesla charger can be pulled out of the Magic Doc so that a Tesla can charge, or if you go through the app and activate that station for CCS the Tesla charger will lock in place, so when you pull it out the CCS Magic Doc will already be locked onto it. You will need the Tesla app for CCS charging.

So for confirmation, steps to using the Tesla network are:
  • Download the Tesla app
    • I am assuming some kind of sign up / credit card
  • Search for charging stations and filter by ‘non-tesla’
  • Open app prior to charging to set it for CSS
Can someone let me know if there are any additional steps?

When you download the app, you will see this page, then navigate to the Charge Your Non-Tesla. After that you can enter a credit card. That page leads you to the chargers that will work for CCS vehicles, there is no other filtering.

Another thing Dan.
The adaptor is only in one station or multiple ones. It seems from the instructions that it prompts you to pull up to one designated station. Is that what you had to do?

Yes, it is on multiple stations. A Tesla can still charge on a station that has a Magic Dock attached to it. If I go up there again this weekend I'll post a video of the process if it hasn't been done before.

Two stations (charging locations) in CA and IIRC there are 8 in NY. Each station has multiple Tesla Superchargers, all with Magic Docks installed.

I just went to the App Store to download the “Tesla app”. There were a number of apps to download: “Tesla”, “Superchargers for Tesla”, “Supercharger Map For Tesla”, etc. Is the app y’all are talking about the “Tesla” app? Thanks.
