For me, it would be an equivalent of what Ford Mach E offers in terms of features and a NACS architecture.

Tesla doesn’t offer some of the features I have come to enjoy in my EV and Gas cars (RCTA BSM 360CAM) and I’ll certainly be not looking to give up on those in my next car. Tesla will likely not add them anytime soon so it’ll have to be a miracle for me to return to Tesla.
I really could *not* handle the lack of an instrument panel in the Tesla, I want to be able to keep my eyes on the road and use my peripheral vision for a quick glance down. I also *adore* how I can monitor lane keeping assist and blue cruise without focusing downwards, I can see the colour and icon shifts without actually focusing my eyes on the IPD.

Yes, I want blind-spot-monitor, and rear cross traffic alert. I also want the brake pedal to do regen braking, Tesla's brake pedal is supposedly only connected to the friction brakes. I also wanted a more unique car instead of just another Tesla, yes, I'm a sucker for the image I was buying. But, really, the IPD delete is what pushed me away from Tesla.

But the one thing that influenced my purchase in the past that may not be relevant for my next car is that I've also *always* wanted a Mustang, since the early 90s. They've always been appealing. I ended up with a Mazda RX7 back-in-the-day, then got into minivans and bigger SUVs for a couple of decades. So buying the MachE scratched an itch that was there for a long time. Now that it's been scratched, maybe it won't be there anymore when I buy my next car. I guess we'll see.

In a discussion elsewhere about whether Elon Musk cost Tesla any sales, I wrote this:

I didn't even need to drive a Model Y in 2021 when I bought my Mach E. Its styling, screen-dominated interface, reported production quality issues, and the sheer banality of owning a Tesla in this area were enough to ignore it back then but 2021 Musk didn't help.
2024 Musk? That's a giant Nope for my whole household.

I will say it's very easy for me to Nope Tesla because Musk when the vehicles themselves are mostly the opposite of what I want and/or need in a vehicle.

I think Ford, Volvo, and Hyundai/Kia/Genesis are (or were) serious about EVs in a way that Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Mazda, Stellantis, etc, etc are not. I think GM....means well...but are behind at the moment?
Fair enough.

My viewpoint is slightly different.

I know exactly what you are saying - you are opposed to buying something that involves someone who you don’t agree with on principles. And that’s quite understandable.

I will say that it doesn’t quite matter to me. All corporations are generally doing the same thing. Some more openly than others. I am part of a company that makes products that you use at least once a day, at least one of them so I know a little bit about what I’m claiming here :).

But it is absolutely fair to believe what your eyes see and not believe what they don’t. Please don’t take the disagreement as a personal attack. I just have a different viewpoint about car preference :)

In other words, if Tesla had made a Mach E, I’d buy it. But they don’t. They haven’t. And they likely won’t. But if they do make something as well equipped, as good looking, and as car-like as Mach E, I might return to them.

BuT tHiS iSn’T a MuStAnG! :D

Excellent points. Agreed on most of them. The lack of instrument panel didn’t bother me much when I had the Model 3. But that suspension and shock absorbers were purely trash. Like absolute garbage grade. Model Y didn’t improve on those until like late 2022 models where they made the suspension better, apparently.

But with the sensors gone, RCTA isn’t going to be implemented in their cars. I doubt they’ll do 360 camera or HUD anytime soon, they did add ventilated seats and in mirror BSM in 3 now so it’s coming to SXY later likely. All these are just deal breakers when they claim to be the best car on the road. Oh and did you notice that I didn’t even mention autopilot or full self driving as something even remotely useful?

If I were to pick now what I think I might buy next, I'd probably say a Rivian R2.

Assuming all goes well with my '23 Mach-E, that's still 4-6 years down the road. A lot of cool new vehicles, EV and ICE, may be out by then so it's tough to say for certain.

If I have a fantastic run with the Mach-E, I may look at getting a 2nd gen GT, assuming Ford continues the model.

I fell in love when I saw the R3X. Holding out for Rivian to weather the storm.

I plan to keep my MME for as long as possible to squeeze as much value out of it as I can (quality of life not just monetary). By the time I'm ready to buy another BEV (never going back to gasoline ?), it'll be a whole new world ?.

I thought R2 as well until I started learning more about it compared to Mach-E features.

Yup. I loved the build quality and overall aesthetics of the R1 variants. And the cameras are nice. Built in dash recording is nice. But that was about it. Legroom in the second row is less than Mach e and the whole ecosystem felt very fragile.

Also I’m sick of car manufacturers putting the charge port on the wrong side and calling it NACS adoption.

I figure I have another 7 years before I have to worry about it. That will make both cars 10 years old. The landscape will be totally different by then. But I am pretty sure I won’t be going back to gasoline power.
