Last year I had to bring my MME in for a state inspection (it didn't take long).
This year, I brought it in and was told that now TX does not require a state inspection for electric vehicles. Who-hoo!
I mean I still have to pay the $200 electric vehicle fee, but not having to pay the ~ $35 inspection fee at least makes that not feel as bad. Glad laws are changing that don't make it a crime to drive an electric vehicle.

What did they inspect last year?

In California they only do a smog check, and for that I think they would find quite hard to hook up the sensor to the tailpipe.

Many counties in Texas don't do inspection for any car.

California got rid of the smog check for electric vehicles in 1996. :)

After 8-years, I finally had to do a smog check for my hybrid SUV.

I’m still wondering what the would have inspected on an EV. I get it for the EU and the UK they inspect their cars for all kinds of things to make sure it is safe to drive, but I have never seen that kind of concern in the US.

I would bet they did absolutely nothing and then charged the fee.

Hawaii has a mandatory state safety inspection for all vehicles. They're valid for two years after the initial sale, then annually thereafter. High and low beam headlamp check, horn, turn signals, emergency flashers, and backup (reverse) light, tire tread, and probably more I've forgotten. EVs get an additional check on the low-speed pedestrian alert (both forward and reverse). No safety inspection? No registration. Plus, it's tickitable (and a separate violation from not having current tags). And yes, given the state of disrepair some cars are in around here, the inspection is a good thing.

No smog check here, the nearly ever-present mighty tradewinds push that stuff (Kilauea's emissions mostly) down to Fanning Island.

I don't even remember what they inspected last year -- maybe brakes, lights, and windshield wipers? I only remember that I needed the inspection to get the renewed registration (like ICE vehicles do).

Yeah, these things make sense. I am a bit surprised my county in TX did away with all inspections, but I am not complaining. Maybe an inspection every 3 years would be a good compromise.

There is or was a lot of pencil whipping the further you get out of the big cities.

Well, that’s kinda sad. That’s one thing I appreciate back then. I moved to Washington from Dallas.
They don’t have annual inspections here and because of that there are so many unsafe cars on the road. Having one headlight or no rear lights are the least dangerous ones.

I believe Texas did away with almost all if not all vehicle inspections. We only have to pay a $7.50 for inspection replacement or something. This will be added to your total at registration. Though my inspection replacement fee was $16.75 🤷🏿‍♂️. Gov. Abbott signed the law back in 2023. Only commercial vehicles are still inspected. There will continue to be emission inspections in emission counties. I don’t know yet how that will work as my county is not yet an emission county (it will become one in 2026).

MD has used the OBD-II for smog checks for over a decade so it would be easy to hook up a Mach E — if the state were dumb enough to require it.
