Phone as Key Question

Hi there,

Our dealer said you must have the physical key on you at all times even if you have phone set up as key. He said the car won't drive without the physical key. I have seen other info online. Just curious if people generally always keep their physical key on them, or only a phone?

Your dealer doesn't know what they are talking about. After the first couple of weeks, I have not used the fob in 17 months of ownership - except to take the car in for service.

Most dealer sales droids only tell the truth if they accidentally stumble on it, or just can't come up with a decent lie.

I am worried I am getting lots of misinformation, I just picked up the car yesterday. I was told to enter the door key code I tried this assuming I could unlock the door if in emergency with it, but the front trunk flew open? Another quirk maybe I am not understanding.

So is there really no need to carry the physical car key then is that the consensus?

Yeah I was confused. He said phone can only lock/unlock. Must have physical key at all times on you. Wow this is very confusing for a new owner to get this misinformation from the dealer ?

If someone got ahold of your physical key they can hit the alarm button and find the car in a heartbeat. With PaaK they would have no clue what car you own unless you don't use a password on your phone and they were able to open FordPass.

A physical key, arguably, is less secure.

There's nothing that a physical key can do that PaaK cannot do. PaaK actually has far more options than your key does. The dealer is just flat out ill informed.

this is the message I received and yeah I agree it makes no sense. Ugh. Oh well. Guess I am on my own with the help of my forum friends

PaaK acts as a physical key when remote starting as well. Just get in the car, foot on brake, push the start button and off you go.

Okay great to know. Thank you so much. One more question, if you use your phone as a key and lets say your phone dies. Would the way to get in the car be using the door key code buttons and then the code you type in to start up on the screen? Is it normal for the front trunk to unlock when typing in the door key code also?

Yes if the phone dies you can use the backup codes. The frunk doesn't have a "lock" perse (at least I don't think). It's just a double release. You can only open it using PaaK, door code + 7-8, or the release within the cabin.

Oh ok, I mean release. So it should not be releasing when I type that door code in right? Because when I tried to use that code the frunk popped up but the door stayed locked..

No. The door code doesn't release (open) the frunk.
