So today I found 3 more rock chips on my hood. That makes 4 total. I’m considering getting PPF on the front end. I have never done this before. What is the longevity of this material? Doesn’t fade or oxidize?

We've had PPF since the first week or so of picking up our Mustang in February 2022.

It's fine. We got a chip before the PPF, but I haven't looked for chips since. It's starting to get dirty at the seams and is starting to peel away, but it's still very minor. We live on a gravel road now (did not when we got the chip).

The film we got is clear and there's no obvious oxidization or fading.

I'm not going to install it on the Lightning.

And whenever it's time to remove it from the Mustang, I don't know if we'll replace it. We might just leave it without or maybe put on a wrap. Who knows. I think we have at least another year of life in the PPF.

I just removed PPF from a 2009 Camry....it was horrible looking...cracked, yellow, etc.. and took FOREVER to remove. Weeks working a few hours a night. Imagine peeling it tiny little piece at a time. And once off, the paint was mismatched. The area where the PPF had been was a different color.

Not to say this is a reason to avoid PPF, but don't plan on it being a forever addition. It will need removed and replaced at some point (less than 15 years like the Camry...lol) and you will see differences in the paint color once removed.

100% right if you only get a partial PPF. You will need a paint correction especially if you didn't ceramic coat the entire car after getting partial PPF.

I went with front ppf and full ceramic. Ceramic pro offers a 10 yr warranty package. So they will rewrap if needed. Kinda expensive but I plan to keep the car through full 8 yr warranty.

Probably too late, but if you haven't watched AMMO NYC on Youtube, he has some PPF removal tips. Most involve constant VERY hot water during the removal. From his perspective it's better than a heat gun or anything else so far.

I had never done nor would I have every considered PPF or ceramic coating, in the past. I did the research and felt it would be a good investment to protect the car. Especially what I paid for the car!

I am 2 years into it and I am 100% satisfied. I would do it on my next car, no second thoughts.

I did the front end, pillars, rocker panels, door sills and back top of bumper. I did ceramic coating on the entire car. I love the fact I do not have to wax it and detail the car. I was paying for twice yearly detailing on my other car so return on investment was about 3 years. I use 3D waterless car wash to wipe down the car. I have not used water to wash the car.

It does add a bit of protection but a good rock or the car door will put a dent in your day. I have scuffed up my door sills and will be replacing them when I take my car in for a check up. I would rather pay for that than have permanent scratches on the door sill.

If your interested in PPF Look at Scott hd on YouTube. He takes no money in any advertising and just tells you like it is, unbiased . His reviews do mostly paint and trim protection. This video is 3 years
PPF left outside untreated no ceramic coat and 1 clear winner.

I had PPF on a 2014 Corvette. Looked great brand new… Not so great after about four or five years.

They also offer a lifetime warranty package. They call it "Ultimate Armor" and includes full front PPF and ceramic coating on the rest of the car.

XPEL did well for me. However, think about a few things...
  1. Handwash only going forward (recommended)
  2. Every so often you have to wash the car with soap from XPEL (can't remember what it's called)
  3. The PPF should 'self heal'. But, from time to time, certain pieces may need to be replaced
...just my experience.

big fan of xpel. and 3m ultimate ppf, been using for years on bikes and motorcycles. Holds up really well and never noted any yellowing. It's head and shoulders better than the ppf film in use back in ca. 2005. https://www.xpel.com/ULTIMATE-PLUS-Paint-Protection-Film-Custom-Length
