Hi everyone,

Someone backed into the front of my Mach-E and though it made a horrible sound, there was only a pebble sized scratch as a result.

Everything seemed fine until the next day when I got the alert “Pre-Collision Assist Not Available.” I wiped the sensor and the camera, but it didn’t resolve the issue.

Has anyone here had any experience with taking it in to be checked by the dealer? What kind of time in shop should I be expecting?

Thanks in advance.

No one can really answer your specific question. Clearly something either broke or was misaligned. You can go to an auto parts store and use their free code reader to pull the code. That may shed some light on it.

Hopefully you go the other person's information. You're looking at some diagnostic time, then they'll figure out if any parts are needed. Things can get expensive fast with sensors and cameras. You might be using your insurance company to get the other person's insurance company to cover your costs in full, including a loaner vehicle.

That error may or may not be related, there are some known problems with the software that causes that error to appear randomly. If the error is still there the next day, then it might be due to the radar module behind the lower grille getting bent out of alignment or damaged. If it's not bent too bad, it could recalibrate itself after driving a while and start working again.

Either way I think you should have your dealer diagnose the issue, they would have to anyway for the body shop/insurance. If the bracket is just bent, bending it back might fix the issue. Dealer time should be a few hours to a day for diagnosis (depends how good the tech is), possibly more if they need a lot of help.

@itachi, this exact thing just happened to me. My Mach-E is only two months old and someone backed into it. Sound was awful but there isn’t even a scratch. The next day, this collision assist light came on and has stayed on since. Wondering what the solution ended up being for you- did the dealer fix it by bending it back into shape? How long were you without your car? I’m worried they are going to start changing codes or plug it in wrong (as some other posters have noted) and then all of a sudden fifteen new things will be wrong with my wonderful car. Thanks for any guidance!

Hi! Whatever was holding the sensor in place was broken and they had to order a replacement. If memory serves correct, we got the car back in 2 days after dropping it off for repair.

Thank you so much! Hoping that my fix is indeed that easy.

Just found this post. I started getting the pre-collision error a few weeks ago. It is intermittent. I would be driving in cruise control/blue cruise and it just drops out and displays the message. Some days it appears and some days it does not. Let me also mention that I slightly nudged a high parking spot barrier (nothing major) and it made a slight separation on the lower front spoiler. Took it to the dealer and they are saying that slight nudge kicked the sensor out of whack. I was like, that's a bad design. He said the part is like $700 (not including labor), and he said it is not covered by the warranty. Is he for real? If it is a software thing, then say so, don't just try to get away with a part install. Literally, it was a nudge.

If it damaged the sensor, it may have also damaged the air shutters. The noise may have been fan contact with the condenser. So, look closely. They need to pull the tub to see. It's all designed to have a controlled collapse in an accident to absorb energy. But being polymer in the front, they will come back out and look normal.
