Yes, some car dealers offer free charging to the public. Chevy dealers, Harley dealers,...

Yeah, it is weird but quite nice to have free charging. It was interesting using a charger outside of a Harley dealer this last weekend.

My local Ford dealer just installed 2 DCFC (only 25 kW). They said call them ahead of time and I can charge whenever I need to. The only DCFC within 100 miles of them as well.

Sure. I've dealer-hopped in our Leaf. However, some dealerships may be happier if you either drive their brand or show an interest in switching.

Remember, except for the CHAdeMO at Nissan dealerships and the 25kW at most Harleys, most dealerships only have L2 charging.

I took a road trip down I75 last year, and initially ignored a charge stop recommended by Sync at a Harley dealer, assuming it was a slow (25-50kW) machine. I was a little annoyed I kept getting routed through them on my return trip, but this time when I actually went to read the description I was pleasantly surprised to see it was a full-blown EA site, with 350kW stalls and everything.

My nephew is a HD GM whose dealership has a charger. He’s a bit of a character. Says if people come in and ask nicely he accommodates but there is a charge for “parking” if you’re a jerk about it. I never know what to believe of what he says.

I have also seen multiple Chevy dealerships with 25kw.

Was driving back to MD from my Ironman Race in Panama City Beach, FL. Decided to choose a ChargePoint DCFC at a Gas station in Alabama as part of the route. Got there and the ChargePoint was out of order and 5% left on the SR Battery.

Looked like only option was a L2 at a Chevy Dealer on the other side of town. Had to hunt around the Dealership to find the EVSE near the Service Dept. Next to the L2 was a brand new DCFC. It looked like it would take a CC but wouldn't start charging. So I went in and asked the Service guy. He said no one had ever used it before, but "some guy comes by in a Nissan every once and a while to use the old one". He went in and after a few minutes came out with an access card that activated the charger (after some serious time handshaking and clicking on both sides). 50kw Woo Hoo! $0 Glad I didn't have to sleep in the car waiting for the L2. Should probably leave a nice Yelp review for those guys.

This was right in the middle of the Bolt recall timeframe so I felt bad asking these guys. I have to think, given the location, they didn't install it voluntarily.
