My second (wife's) MME is scheduled to be delivered in about 6-7 weeks and want to get ready to sell her existing car. Anyone with experiences outside of traditional channels like dealership & carmax? Heard Carvana, Vroom. Looking for stress free and time saving process. ...and top dollar.

Carmax has been a higher offer than Vroom for my last 3 cars. I also don't trust Vroom after buying a car from them. Carmax is a done deal when you leave and about as stress free as it gets. I've used givemethevin before and it was also pretty painless and they come to you.

The services will differ vastly depending on your location. Some, like Carmax, require you to go there for an appraisal. My nearest Carmax locations are 2 hours away... Some, like Carvana, are giving much lower estimates than in the past. Add Driveway.com, CarBuyer USA, and CarGurus to the list. Put it up for sale on Cars.com, Autotrader.com, Craigslist, and Facebook.

+1 on @RickMachE 's recommendation for Driveway. They're typically offering higher pricing than Carvana and Vroom. Also consider an Autonation dealer in your area.

I'm selling in the same timeframe and have been tracking prices closely. Driveway, Cargurus, and Carlots(?) have the best prices in my research. I haven't priced Carmax yet since they don't do online appraisals.

Vroom and Carvana are in a lot of financial trouble and are lowballing every offer.

Driveway is great, but after you accept the offer, recently it literally takes about a month to get the signature paperwork which they send overnight. They pay right away once the signed papers are returned, both to the lender and the difference direct deposit to the seller. Reports of how long it takes to pick up the car after that vary, but like Vroom, they come to you. They say during the month before signed papers, with no obligation, you could sell to another party. Driveway's offers lately are higher than Vroom or Carvana.

Vroom, which comes to you and picks up, needs the car delivered to them before they pay.

Carvana gives you a check when they pickup, but around here anyway, the pick up locations get further away every year, so you have to drive there, then use something like a rental to get home.

I've sold a lot of cars in my day. You can sell wholesale which means you're selling to other retailers like Carmax, Carvana, etc. They can't pay you retail because they need to sell it retail. This also includes trade-in to a dealer when buying a new car.

I've always sold my cars retail. This means I'm selling it to another private party. That's the only way to get the best price.

I'm wondering if those places will even buy an MME with the current recall still pending a fix.

I'm sure that is right, years ago I used to mostly sell my used car to a private individual. I don't know why, but it feels somewhat more risky now, either by some kind of fraud or the risk of having to deal with an unhappy buyer.

The only caveat is that with start up companies newly funded in fierce competition with each other, sometimes it seems they don't so much mind taking less profit or even a loss, just to get a hot car on their sales list. Beepi was like that, sadly when they were hot, they didn't buy in my area. Offers were very high. I think they since went out of business.

So, just a closing note on Driveway. Soon after closing by overnight mail, they paid my equity by direct deposit (days) and then Ford the difference (about a week). They assigned a local dealer as the pickup dealer. That dealer is so close (3 miles), I drove Louibluey over. I was going to walk home, but they insisted on giving me a ride home. So, it took just over a month, but overall, the experience was much better than Vroom or Carvana.

At one point during the month, I was about to try Carvana again, but accidently filled out the Driveway form again. The new offer was $1k+ higher! I called to "complain", but they said, yes no problem, the value has gone up, you can have the higher number! FE, 7,500 miles, $58,500, not bad, especially considering that I got to drive it for a year and half. Still shines like new, the local guy who does ceramic coatings is amazing! Overall, best car I have ever had the pleasure to own, thank you Ford! ?? (old guy, okay sorry, I guess I kind of understand the icons now :)

I'm moving on to try out an Ioniq 5 in the fall/winter, then might circle back in a year or two for a GTPE as my full retirement vehicle which I might keep for some years, not sure yet.

Since Safety Recall 22S41 software update is being installed at dealers, the recall is being cured.
