Repeatable CarPlay nav malfunction

Off and on over the past three years, CarPlay navigation has mistaken where the car is currently located. Then it would magically fix itself the next time I got in the car. As of this month, CarPlay has begun failing again, only updating the location every 4 seconds or so (periodically), and completely losing track of which direction the car is facing. It seems to default to north. When this happens, CarPLay navigation is completely unusable. If I delete my phone from the car and add it back, it works correctly, but only for that trip. Next trip is messed up again.

But here's the weird thing I've noticed: it always works correctly on my first drive of the day. If I drive somewhere again within say an hour, it fails 100% of the time. If I wait several hours, i.e., spend the day at work, and return to the car, it works correctly on that trip. But if I again travel somewhere on a second drive too soon afterwards, it fails 100% of the time.

What is going on in my car or my phone that would cause CarPlay to fail if I drive too soon after concluding a prior trip?

FWIW, I recently went on a trip and rented a Mazda. CarPlay with my phone worked fine there, once I got it connected. When I got back to my Mach-e, the problem returned.

CarPlay is just a mirror of your iPhone so my guess it’s in the settings.

However what is annoying is I’m charging listening to say any music, open safari etc and shuts down the music. I can to force open the music again.

FWIW I use wireless CarPlay on every drive and frequently gps. Usually google maps but also apple and Waze. I have never had this problem other than rare places with no phone service at all. I have an iPhone 13.

I had this problem for a while. I rebooted my phone and it came back. I rebooted sync. I rebooted my phone again. Now I don't seem to have the problem. I have zero confidence that rebooting anything had anything to do with anything. But, anyway, try rebooting your phone or updating it.

I had this problem *again* yesterday. My son was with me in the car and he reminded me that we had the same problem using CarPlay in a rented car (not a MachE and not a Ford) in May. So, I don't think it's a MachE problem — I think it's an iOS/iPhone problem.

I switched to the built-in navigation, and it worked perfectly, so the car's GPS seems fine.

Yes, but if you reset the console, and it worked, it’s a car problem.

I’ve been experiencing this issue Avery few days since I got the MME in April. It always happens in wireless CarPlay. I usually have my iPhone plugged in because the charging is much faster and the phone does not heat up… so I swipe down on the screen, turn off the wireless connection in my iPhone, and then the gps seems to correct itself and then Apple Maps no longer shows my car driving through houses and on lawns.

Oh, that's interesting. I'll give that a try. Way better than resetting the APIM every time I drive it twice in an hour.
