Hi all,

i put snow chains during the Tahoe snow storm and after washing the car, I noticed the cables scratched my rims. It’s not a deep scratch. It’s more of a top layer Grace. It seems like I can polish it off, but wanted to get some advice from y’all. Anybody ever deal with this?

Given that the face is machined, a shop with a large enough lathe can re-carve the grooves, you need to clear coat it afterwards though. They essentially paint or powder coat the wheel and then machine the face back to bare metal and then put a protective coat on it.

Given the cost however, you'll likely find great condition takeoffs to be a better option. Keep those around for your chains :)

Looks like you have a few options.

Find a rim repair shop and have them remachined and then clear coated again. Where I live this is quite expensive at around $300 per rim plus mount and balance.

Second powder coat them. This is what I would do you need to take them off the car and to a shop that powder coats usually around $500-600 plus mount and balance. I would do gloss black that would look great on a MME.

Third buy a new / used set of rims. I just bought a set off eBay 19" premium wheels for $750. And it sounds like this could be a good opportunity to have a 2nd set for winter tires.

Fourth buy a set of aftermarket wheels

I’ve used these folks in San Jose. The work was top notch and I’m extremely picky.

They are close by to me! Thank you! Can you share the work they did for you and the price you paid? Just I get an idea.

my 19’s on my Lexus got curb rash and it caused the paint to peel off in chunks. The wheels were completely stripped of paint , machined and painted hyper silver. Paid about 250 a wheel. Took a week after I left the wheels with them.

you can shop around but that’s about the going rate at all shops on the Bay Area.

I would use a Palm sander.... sand all the way down to flat with an aggressive grit like 125 if you want to leave it Matte, or go back over with 200, 400, 800 if you want smoother/shiny... and then clearcoat.

At $1000 for repair I would do this.

Then I would sell the factory wheels. Or keep them and put winter tires on them

I put SNOWS on factory wheels, and bought 'nice' wheels for all-season..... I switch to Snow wheel when we get big snow, and/or when I know I am headed into the mountains during winter... I've never needed chains, and highly recommend Vredestien Wintrac-pro for snow/ice conditions.

If I were you I wouldn’t fix them and use them for winter season.

The cost to fix them exceeds what you can find new ones someone “took off” their new Mach-e.

you can find much nicer aftermarket wheels or perhaps upgrade to GT wheels.

First question: Is the damage only in the clear coat or does it extend into the aluminum? If it is just in the clear coat, a paint shop can fix it. ??

It seems like it’s just the clear coat. I not feel and deep scratches. I’m going to get a quote.

I would ask the shop if they think a Powder coat would be more durable than the clear coat. If every time you use the chains you need to have the wheels repaired that could get expensive
