Scoring mark on front rotor? Normal?

Front right rotor only has a scoring mark. I can feel it if I rub my finger on it.
Also, does anyone have a link to a video on how to replace front pads and rotor? I have done it on most of my cars myself and am pretty mechanically inclined. But this is my first EV and want to know if there are different things I will need to tackle.

It's normal when a piece of grit gets stuck between the pad and the rotor. It doesn't usually affect performance, and isn't necessarily cause for replacing the rotor. If you do end up doing brake work yourself, you'll need an FDRS license to put the brakes into maintenance mode. Others have done that and accidentally gotten the car stuck in that mode, so it may not be worth doing it yourself.

Maintenance mode is for the parking brake (rear only). You can do it without FDRS via a push button sequence - I haven't tried it on the Mach-E but assume it's the same.

For the fronts (where your problem is) - though I haven't seen the gouge, I'd probably ignore it unless there's issues with the rest of the pad contacting the rotor.

That's just corrosion buildup. I'd do a few more neutral stops and it should clean up

2 Problems for you here.

1st is that these car’s only use the friction brakes from about 5MPH down (one-pedal or not doesn’t matter). During normal opperation, It’s electric motor braking until it’s almost to a stop. So the rotors never get polished like on the ICE vehicles we were used to. One little piece of sand can wear a groove, and the rest of the pad never gets ground down to match. So those of us that pay attention to our brakes notice these grooves. We would call it uneven wear on an ICE car. Here it’s just the only spot That is wearing at all. Is it a problem… probably not. This can be prevented by forcing the friction brakes to engage and polishing the rotor. I do it about every 5 days. Get up to about 50-60 MPH, shift to neutral, and brake hard. You can physically feel the first 2 seconds that the rotors and pads are being cleaned and then they really start grabbing.

2nd problem, can you change your brakes… yes. But don’t open the system. If you end up needing to bleed your brakes, you’re going to need FDRS. The workshop manual procedure for bleeding brakes is one line that states “Attach to an FDRS computer and follow the prompts for bleeding brakes.“ So if it’s a simple rotor swap, easy enough. I have an old post about putting the car in brake maintenance mode. If you forget to do that, and you turn the car on, the brakes are automatically applied and you can blow the pistons out of the calipers. Don’t ask how I know. Then you have to put it all back together and you’re back to needing FDRS to bleed the system.

So if you choose to try this yourself, be careful, follow the procedures, and then make sure to clean/rebed your pads and rotors weekly, or after every carwash/wet drive.

I just noticed this myself. 3 rotors are pretty smooth and one rotor (rear passenger side) is scored badly. The test is to run your finger over it and feel deep grooves. A healthy rotor is pretty smooth. A little rust is fine (yours seems okay-ish) on a rotor.

The passenger rear of mine feels like an old school record. There are ridges (bad). This is the same rotor that had brake pad binding (I've posted about this elsewhere) which happens after heavy rain. I suspect this rotor and brake pad will need replacing at the next service interval.

Same issue with my left rear rotor. Dealer replaced both rear rotors under warranty. The new rotors appear more corrosion resistant as they have not rusted over.

My fronts are immaculate, rears look just like yours (plenty of deep ingrained marks which aren't just on the surface). Shop showed me when it had it's yearly inspection but also said it's fine, just letting you know.
