SSM 50383: Middle display dim or totally out

I took The Pony in to get this problem looked at - my middle display has periods where it is dim or completely black.
I know the screen reset sequence (hold volume down button and right arrow button down for 10 seconds) and this usually solves the problem.
But we had an incident where we needed to turn the defroster on immediately and could not because we couldn't see the display.
Here's the response I got from my dealer:

Also, you don't need to do a reset to get it to restore. Just use the +/- buttons to the right of the headlight dial and the screen will be bright again.
