Brought my car in for the sync update, and other modules if needed. They had usb error with first module, but eventually worked(gwm I think) and then multiple usb errors on the apim module, I picked it up today and we are waiting for the mothership to give advice and help. They did mention that they had similar issues with 3 others.

anyone else have these issues, and how was it resolved?

Why are they updating with USB drives?

It is how FDRS directs you to do it. In theory if you have a male to male USB A cable you can do it direct but I'm not sure if that is in FDRS yet or if they have that cable even if it is. So USB is the second option.

APIM firmware is updated over CAN, software is updated via USB.

It sounds like they may be having some of the same USB problems a number of us had. Some USB drives do not work, and then you have to wait for the messages that tell you what to do, including when it is okay to remove the USB drive.

It started in this FDRS thread around here, and goes for pages after that. By several pages in, most everyone got it working.

Some techs do not seem to be following the instructions closely, but there are probably other reasons for failure too. The instructions for the Sync update are here (scroll down to the PDF). Sam posts these PDFs for all of the SSMs, TSMs on the forum. These are the same instructions the techs should be following.

I think there was only the one USB update for Sync 4. The other updates work by a laptop connected through a device that plugs into the OBDII port. The Laptop runs Ford's FDRS software. All of those updates are done through the OBDII port where that J2534 pass through device plugs in. The laptop connects to the device by a USB cable.

That said, most are getting the Sync update over the air.

This could be the issue too:
SSM 50140 - 2021 Mustang Mach-E/F-150/Edge - Gateway Module (GWM)/Telematic Control Unit (TCU) Programming Failure Some 2021 Mustang Mach-E, F-150, and Edge vehicles may experience a GWM and/or TCU programming failure with an error message displayed in the Ford Diagnosis and Repair System (FDRS) stating The Programming Or Part Number Validation Process Has Failed. This may be due to the USB flash drive being removed from the vehicle media hub before fully completing reprogramming. Reprogram the module(s) following the vehicle onscreen prompts. After the ignition cycle during reprogramming, the touchscreen may go blank. This is a normal part of the reprogramming process. Leave the USB flash drive installed in the media hub until the touchscreen displays Update Successful.
