Elon Musk announced the Model S and Model X will cease production and the end of the next quarter.

https://techcrunch.com/2026/01/28/tesla-is-killing-off-the-model-s-and-model-x/

“Tesla is ending production of the Model S sedan and Model X SUV, CEO Elon Musk announced Wednesday during the company’s quarterly earnings call.

The company will make the final versions of both electric vehicles next quarter, he said, adding that his company will offer support for existing Model S and Model X owners “for as long as people have the vehicles.”

It’s time to basically bring the Model S and X programs to an end with an honorable discharge, because we’re really moving into a future that is based on autonomy,” he said. “So if you’re interested in buying a Model S and X, now would be the time to order it.”

The Model S and Model X are both built at the company’s Fremont factory. Once production ends, Tesla will build Optimus robots in the same factory space in Fremont, California, according to Musk.

Tesla launched the Model S in 2012, and it is regarded as the first car that made electric vehicles widely appealing. The Model X was Tesla’s second major electric vehicle program.

Tesla always intended for its more affordable models — the Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV — to greatly outsell their predecessors.

But sales of both models have flatlined in recent years, despite interior and exterior refreshes along the way. Tesla has faced increased competition in the luxury EV space from legacy automakers, as well as upstarts like Rivian and Lucid Motors.

“So that is slightly sad, but it’s… it is time to bring the S and X programs to an end,” Musk said.

This story is developing…”

I mean... when you haven't majorly updated either of them in 10+ years, of course sales have "flatlined". Nevermind the Elon+politics angle.

At least this should tell us exact how many Cybertrucks they're selling now - since those numbers were mixed in with the S and X numbers.

I do not disagree.

I think half of them were sold in Toronto - I see *at least* one a day when I'm driving around. Most I've seen in one day was nine.

A family recently moved into our neighborhood with both an X and Cybertruck. Sadly, since the arrival of the CT, neighborhood property values have tanked. The X, and assorted 3s and Ys, including the one across the street opposite my house (to be fair, that Y is counter balanced by a GLE sharing the same garage), and Mach Es, and a random Prologue, a Polestar, and various Hyundai and Kia’s, have not negatively affected the property values. It’s the darn Cybertruck ….😎

I do not disagree.
Haha! Only my opinion but their design seemed dated when they first came out but that’s a trait typical of a manufacturers with no hereditary in car production.

Their design was a modified or truncated teardrop, because coefficient of drag and stuff. That cripples anything resembling style. So yes, you’re right imo, it was dated back then even.

if I was going to buy a Tesla, and I’m not, it would’ve been the MS. But, if I do report on my buying a Tesla, kindly check our basement for pods. :p

I think the androgynous shape appealed to a lot of the same people who went early and hard for “green” vehicles. Not unlike the Prius crowd. This bland and spartan design, mostly white, also fed into the fantasy many of these same early adopters had that they’d be monetizing their vehicles as autonomous people-movers. They were like the car of the future… as envisioned in 1960s sci-fi.

Still, the X and S were far more attractive than the Y and the 3. Just too expensive. It’s the end of an era!

I don't doubt the Cyberjunk won't be too far behind.
It was the Oracle of Pretoria’s passion project. He’ll keep it around long enough to declare it a success and then kill it.

I wouldn't hold your breath on that one. He's already said that they're going to convert that production line into Optimus production (which is its own hilarious thought).
Maybe he can teach those useless robots to drive?

S and X are played out for sure. As cool as 1000 hp sedans and SUVs are on paper, they really don’t have much mass appeal when it comes to people actually buying them. Keep in mind a few years ago they dropped the price on each by $50,000!!

Faster than a Ferrari for under 100k? Cool!

Want to buy one? NOPE!
