Ya I had it work when a car cut me off as well. I need to find a better way to re do this test safely and figure out how big something needs to be to be seen by the car.

The test subject must have metal in it. That’s the only way the car detects another vehicle or object as it’s driving. Same with stopping for people. It has to be a real person or something the camera detects as a human. My Mach E does the auto rear braking. I’ve done a test on that and it does work very well.

Every time you kill the blow up animal I laughed, it doesn't prove a thing but it really was entertaining. I think you need much bigger objects for it to be a real test. Perhaps One of those big blow up dancing men.

well, the system may work better with larger objects, the fact remains that if this is how it reacts with small objects, it’s still not good. Those balloons were about the size of a small child. Think about that. Good test man. Thanks for posting this.

So I know the reverse assist braking works, I've experienced it several times backing out of my drive. There seems to be something about the incline from my drive to the road that the car senses as an object in the way. It always beeps at me to suggest there's something in the way. Usually I can ignore the beeps and successfully reverse. However 2 times (or maybe 3 now), the car has applied emergency braking and stopped the car, even though there is nothing there. Somewhat annoying, but I take comfort that this is a right-side failure. Better than the other version.

However, the front brake assist is a bit less convincing for me. I was in slow traffic over the weekend on the I-5. I was in full hands-free mode and at one time the vehicle started to accelerate towards the vehicle in front of me even though it had not started moving . Fortunately, I do pay attention when in hand free mode and was able to stop the car before hitting the one in front. Made my wife unhappy though :( Having said that, I sat in slow traffic for 45+ mins not having to do anything 99% of the time, so I'm still happy.

I had a fun "test"just a few days ago, what also got me thinking. I was going 70mph on i90 and tumble weeds started to blow across the road. I was expecting the car to try and slow down or something. Cause if it did try to slam on the breaks that would be super dangerous at 70mph. Even tho I was ready to apply full throttle, the car never did slow down or even alert as we hit the tumble weeds. What got me thinking about my test with the balloons. The car did not slow down or stop since it knew the object was not a threat. I may try and do a part 2 with card board, but if that does not even work, we will have to leave the tests to the professionals with all there fancy equipment.

I had that happen once or twice as well. There is an edge case with the cruise radar and ghost targets from reflections where it thinks the car in front of you has started moving. Usually it seems to be because there's a large vehicle in an adjacent lane moving and the radar reflections are appearing to move with it. Radar is weird.

There is also the possibility it was caused by interference from another radar in the 77 GHz band. Interference from other vehicles is becoming more of a concern as more vehicles have adaptive cruise radars. If every car had 5 radar sensors like the Mach-E, a crowded highway could have hundreds of radar signals bouncing around.

Yeah it's not going to pick up tumbleweeds...
