Many states have “exhibition of speed” laws that cover various activities like street racing, which I’m quite sure the cop could argue was happening if both vehicles took off hard from the light.
Well, that's just not nearly as much fun.

Great thing is, you probably could have floored it, and Jr till would have gotten busted, not you. There's no law against accelerating quickly, just breaking traction and reckless driving.

I love silently getting to the next light before the other car clears the first intersection.

Gonna have to disagree here. If both OP and the Mach 1 had taken off, then the officer could have busted both of them for drag racing, which is a pretty serious offense. OP did good by being situationally aware and letting the Mach 1 drive hang himself.

(edited because for some reason my last sentence got cut off.

Yup.

And many of those laws showed up right after the Fast and the Furious movie came out. Lots of press and political pressure against “street racing” at the time. Even though it’s been around as long as cars have.

Old laws- the street racing punishment depended on what you did- speeding, improper start (spin tires), reckless driving etc.

New laws- street racing punishment equals drunk driving punishment.

It’s one of the few laws on the books where your punishment depends on what the person in another car, separate from you does.

You accelerate quickly from a stoplight and don’t speed….. no punishment. You do it and the car next to you does as well….. you both could lose your licenses.

All that said, be safe out there!

Yep,
Both Delaware and my former state of NY has "exibition of speed" laws that cover two or more vehicles "as witnessed" by a law enforcement officer.

Well it finally happened, waited a couple of weeks for this and now I can safely say...

Watch out you pimple faced kids! just had the 22S41 software update and dropped the Blue Meanie back into Unbridled for the drive home from the dealer.

No noticable difference, same power as before and as a side note the braking coming to a full stop is now just slightly better and smoother.
Had to setup my home charging again in Fordpass since many of my settings were erased during the update.

This is going to be a FUN weekend! going fishin'

On a nice night back when I had my pre Mustang Falcon Futura with a 265 Chevy and dodge I-beam front end minding my own business in the inside lane at the light a Fairlane Big Block pulls up. So he starts reving his motor and I noticed a Cop two back in the outside lane. So we brought the revs up on the yellow, green he lays a strip and I calmly turned right. He won a ticket but I would have smoked him anyway.

One day I was sitting at the light in my truck with my girlfriend, minding my own business, when my old rival Needles shows up. He revved his engine, and called me a chicken. Nobody calls me chicken. I'm sure you know what happened next... ?

Oh, back in my younger days I got many “unsafe start” pull overs in the ‘66. Bought the car 2 months before I turned 16 from a guy who had dropped a crazy 289 in it and was very hesitant to even sell it to me. Since we pulled up in my buddy Shawn’s Ivy Green ‘66, he softened up. We used to run light to light on a 55mph street racing 0-60s. Nope, still not legal.
