Transmission fluid pump stalled; 88mph speed cap

Thought I should chime in on this thread since I just got my GT back yesterday after the oil pump was replaced. I hit the 87 mph wall on my way to Yosemite a couple weeks ago and then needed to make an unplanned trip to LA the following weekend. In total I drove over 1,800 miles with the oil pump stalled. (A friend looked at PTS and told me it had stalled back in April - I just didn't know it because for reasons known only to some ivory-tower inhabiting Ford employees, the car doesn't put up SVS or any other indication other than the aforementioned 87 mph wall.) To my shock and wonder, the front motor was fine. (It was the front oil pump that was stalled.)

So while Ford absolutely should directly inform the vehicle driver that a problem has occurred and the car needs to be serviced, it does appear that you can, in at least some cases, drive the car without further damage to the motors. If my car wasn't in warranty I probably would have been a bit more careful, but honestly I didn't adjust my driving at all after it happened.

Mind you, you need to make your own risk assessment and decide what it right for you. But I thought I should let you know that the car is potentially more drivable in that condition than you'd guess...

No warning of any kind, the only reason I suspected an issue was speed was limited at 87mph when I tried to pass a slow moving truck. The dealer warned me that they will charge me a 250$ diagnostic fee if the issue is not covered under the 5yr/60,000 mile warranty. I am at 58,000 on my 21 GT.

It should be under edrive warranty (high voltage) but I would definitely take it there as quick as possible

Out of curiosity, what were the temperatures when you got the coolant overheat warning? Could you post temperature graphs from the trip in obd2 app?

I don't have the temp graph but it was 270f on the motor coil. Transmission was 210f

Not yet, but the field service engineers should be aware of it.

As I understand it, if the motor needs to be replaced - then it will be under high voltage components warranty replacement.

But if it’s only the oil pump that is being replaced, Ford will only honour the power train warranty.

That’s the understanding I got from my dealer, however I will admit it seems like the wrong way of approaching it. So while your mileage may vary, don’t automatically assume the high voltage component warranty will apply

So the dealer is replacing the entire motor. They didn't even bother taking the motor apart. Under HV warranty

This shouldn't be a dead issue because, I'm having the exact same issue. However, I'm not seeing any warnings. The car caps at 85mph and it may get as high as 88 mph. Back in March, I was on a trip and the car did this. I didn't pay it any attention because at the time, I was low on charge around 26% and I didn't get any type of warning, so I chalked it up to the it being low on charge.

Back in April, I took the car in for several recalls (23S56, 22P31B, 23B50B). After the service was completed, I'd started getting the warning for 1 Pedal driving faults. When I took the car in for that warning, I asked about both issues, and they said the car issued codes for the 1 Pedal drive. Nothing else. I asked their being an issue from any of the work, particularly 23S56 and they said no. I did have my work done in early April, before the 1 Pedal driving issue was discovered, so I don't know. They did the work to resolve the 1 Pedal drive issue, they replaced Electric Drive Assembly, and it says they also replaced the Pump Assembly - Oil.

Since the fixes, I still don't get any warnings and only once was I able to get the car to exceed 88 mph and have not been able to get it above that again. It doesn't matter what amount of charge I have. So, back to the dealer I go.

Interesting. I think I'm one of the few people who got a service vehicle soon light on my dash regarding it. I'd keep pushing them about the issue and tell them to give you a printout if the DTC codes. There should be something about an oil pump in there.

Hopefully that is true, I agree there needs to be a service soon message, if not for this forum I would have kept on driving…albeit below 88mph.

I bought a Veepeak OBB-II scan tool on Amazon, well worth 25$. It works with CarScan and is super easy to use.

Update: I got my car fixed and it worked the first time I tested it. A few days later, I decided to try it again and it's doing the same thing! Now I'm getting P2796 codes. I took it back to the dealer and they couldn't fix it. They're telling me they aren't getting any codes. They also said they worked with Ford's techs and couldn't fix.

I called Ford care and they suggested that I take it to another dealer. I'll give this a shot and see what happens.
