Left this morning from NY, 6 am. Car was charged to 100%, showed approx 90kw. My SOH seems to have gone up (to over 96.5 ) since the last time I checked. GOM showed 270. Car was loaded with stuff for a weeks vacation and 2 passengers.
I had several plans to charge during the 240 mile trip.
A: stop in Rhode Island at a park and lock , 2 ChargePoint 62.5 stations, 140 miles from home - charging is free
B: stop in another RI park and Lock 25 miles up the road , same fast charger setup. 165 miles from home - charging is free
C: stop at an EA station in Dartmouth, Mass, - 200 miles from home
Plan A - no good, both stations being used
Plan B - no good for same reason
Plan C- the one I used. 4 Stations, 1 was not working-plugged in getting 41kw. Stayed only 9 minutes to get a little juice.
I really did not need to charge since we could have made the trip with battery to spare but my wife said since we are so early letâs charge up a little. So I did as little as possible.
I FCDCâd in Hyannis at the cape cod Mall at an EA 350 station- started at 164 and was close to 100 up until around 70% (went up and down at times) when it went down to about 41 before 80% Took 29 minutes to charge from 27% to 80%. Of the 4 stations, 1 was broken. a Rivian, ID4 and Audi were already there at the other 3 stations so I had to wait about 15 minutes.
The Audi charged to 100% unfortunately. He said he needed it to get home to Ct . I explained that there were chargers on 95 going home, he said he wasnât aware of it. He also was not aware of Tesla adding CCS to a number of fast chargers in NYS. He loves his car but hates it and getting rid of it when lease is over. In the shop constantly and they donât know how to fix it . Sound familiar. As an FYI, charging from 90% to 100% in his car was pretty quick. I didnât look at the speed, a mistake.
The Rivian owner loved the car but took off quickly so I didnât get much feedback. The ID4 owner didnât know how to use EA equipment. I had to help her get it started.
Back to my car. based on the numbers I could have gotten about 315 miles on a full battery averaging 3.5 miles. Very happy with those numbers.
weather was mixed, a bit of drizzle and rain but nothing much. I never did above 67 mph. Cloudy all morning.
a few notes.
Wife still doesnât like taking car on a long trip. She says it good for local driving but thatâs it. This trip may have convinced her otherwise but she said , are you really thinking of driving this to Florida? so sheâs not really convinced.
car was great but in order to get the range I did, I purposely went 5-7 mph slower than I normally would in an ICE, plus being retired I am not in a rush anymore.
to the GOM- before I brought it in to the dealer last Monday and they updated the GWM and APIM it would show up to 300 miles. This morning as I left the house it showed 270 and quickly went to 260 as I drove. I just fast charged it up to 80% and it registered 225 miles. In the past it would show 240 many times. For some reason it has changed so maybe what the dealer did affected the GOM. Suspect it will go back to norm after some more driving.
long distance driving is not a problem but, slow chargers, broken chargers and all chargers being taken are a real issue. First time all 3 affected me.
1: have many plans, I knew this but reinforced on this trip
2: Donât trust the GOM, trust battery %, nothing new here.
3: I used EA and Chargepoint and Ford Nav along the way to check on charger availability so I did not have to get off road needlessly. All worked well.
4: make sure wife I phone is fully charged up so she is distracted from potential charging problems. Makes for a more pleasant trip.
good luck to everyone taking trips the remainder of the summer.
