Using Tesla adapter with home charger

I recently got the free Tesla adapter.
Yesterday I tried it at my friend’s home Tesla charger.
Everything plugs in fine, the charging light on MachE turns blue but after a minute or two it throws the charging fault.
We tried it 2,3 times same results.
Is there some setting I have to do?

The adapter is only for Superchargers (that are either V3 or V4 and not the older models). Not Tesla destination chargers (aka Level 2).

Thank you. I’ve been trying to figure out whether anything bad would happen if the DC adapter is used for AC charger, and vice versa. I’m glad that nothing was damaged or blew up. This is useful, and gives me confidence that having both AC and DC adapter would not lead to catastrophes if I accidentally used the wrong one.

The free Tesla adapter you received is for DC fast charging.

You are trying to use your DCFC adapter on a Tesla AC home charger.

For this you will need a Level 2 AC adapter which is very useful adapter for non-Tesla EV.

Lots of folks use a NACS Level 2 charger / Tesla destination chargers and pair it with an adapter to use it on their vehicle with J-1772 plug. This adapter works on Tesla home chargers and Tesla Destination chargers which are commonly found at shopping centers, grocery stores and Airbnb.

You can use the same Tesla Find Us link to locate Tesla Level 2 destination chargers.

The only three brands / model I would buy is A2Z Stellar, UMC TeslaTap or Lectron J-1772

I personally bought the 48 amp Lectron and gave it away to a forum member and prefer to use the 80 amp A2Z Stellar with built in lock and compact design.

I am currently using the A2Z Stellar NACS to J-1772 adapter which is available for $92, compact build, has a built in lock, good customer service / warranty and overbuilt for futureproofing.

Also once you get the adapter make sure your friends Tesla charger is set to allow non Tesla to charge as well. He might need to go into the settings and change it.
