Sorry for being naïve, but what is the advantage of a reservation? I reserved 12/22/20 and ordered today, 3/16/21. What did I get for $500? Thanks

In theory, a reservation gets you a place in line for production scheduling, though it's clear that isn't strictly followed.

I thought reservations were only available before Ford opened the order banks. So you shouldn't have been able to place a new reservation in December of 2020 since the order banks had been open for 6 months by then. Unless it was a GT reservation, but then you wouldn't have been able to order it today since those order banks haven't opened up yet.

The right to an interminable delay and information blackout with those of us who didn’t.

Welcome aboard.

Reservations got people earlier ability to decide whether to accept their car. I reserved a GT, decided that I didn't need the 1sec 0-60 difference, and SOMEONE BACKED OUT OF a first edition which ended up available on a dealer's lot, so I picked it up. My understanding is that the MMEs available on dealer lots are mostly if not all there for sale because someone declined to take delivery for whatever reason.

Is it safe to assume you reserved a GT? The Mach E order system was opened mid-2020 so you should not have been able to reserve a Mach E.

Besides $500 towards your purchase price, my two cents is that it gets you inline or maybe even guarantees that the configuration you really want shows up on your dealer's lot, whenever that may happen.

For example, I reserved/ordered a Grabber Blue First Edition. There were only so many First Editions built (in fact, they can't be ordered anymore), so that was one advantage. I believe the California Rt 1 versions are similarly limited.

The other reason is to make sure you get the color you want. Grabber Blue is limited to FE and GT, and I really wanted it. From what I've seen dealers tend to order moderate versions of more mainstream colors for their inventory: some version of black, white, grey, and sometimes red. If you want to make sure the color you really like shows up, then that is another reason to pre-order.
