I bought a 40 amp level 2 charger after having a 50 amp breaker and NEMA 14-50 outlet put in just to get a little faster charging than the 30 amp that Ford supplies. The Ford charger works great. The other one pops the breaker after charging for about 10-15 mins. New house plenty of power so that's not the problem. Could it be a bad charger?

Maybe. I'm thinking it's more likely that something's wrong with the house circuit or the breaker that's protecting the circuit. Have it inspected by an electrician.

It's a brand new house and the 50 amp was in fact installed by a licensed electrician.

Is it a gfci breaker? Most chargers recommend not to use a gfci breaker. It can cause tripping of the breaker.

Not sure. I can call the electrician tomorrow and ask what he installed.

If it’s a new house it probably does have a gfci breaker. The most up to date code requires a gfci breaker on a nema 14-50 outlet. Even though most 3rd party chargers recommend not using a gfci outlet, the included Ford mobile connector recommends using a gfci breaker.

You reset the breaker, right? It would be marked as GFCI...

Breaker should NOT be GFCI, the GFCI is built-into the EVSE itself. I'd recommend not using one unless your code inspector requires it. If the GFCI breaker is nuisance tripping then I would get rid of it since the primary use of the outlet is protected by the EVSE anyway. I suppose the legal way around this it to take the outlet out and hardwire it to the junction box then you don't need a GFCI breaker even with current NEC.

Electrician needs to look at it and verify settings. Do not reset the breaker more than one time or you are risking a house fire. He will probably tell you to shut it off and not use it until he gets there, which I would recommend you do.

I used the outlet for the supplied Ford charger after resetting the breaker twice. It worked for over 3 hours with the Ford charger with no problems.

Don't use it again before the electrician comes and sees what he did wrong.

If you are going to troubleshoot this problem, you need an Amprobe
https://www.amprobe.com/product/ac68c/ ,or less expensive equivalent.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Klein-T...Digital-Clamp-Meter-with-Temp-CL700/206517414

It will tell you exactly how many amps you are drawing with either charger. How many amps is the 40 amp charger drawing, compared to the specs that should be printed on the charger?

Doing anything less is just guesswork.
