From the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS):

First up for the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E are evaluations of headlights, vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and pedestrian front crash prevention. Crashworthiness evaluations kick off in a few weeks.

In a weird, childish way, I'm interested in knowing how these cars crash. It's been well documented that they are an absolute beast at 4,500 pounds with extremely low leverage. To me that sounds like a combination that would do well in a collision with say a Honda civic. Looking forward to hearing the commentary about it and really sad to see some MME's meet their death before I'm allowed to even test drive one. :(

Maybe @ChasingCoral is correct as I do not know rules or laws on selling cars but maybe since the crash testing hasn't been done yet or report not finished they are unable to sell the vehicles to mass population hence only 3 cars were sold. In case they have to be recalled for deficiency on crash testing they don't have a mass pool to recall from customers.
The IIHS is an industry organization ... not a governmental regulatory body. But there are governmental regulations that do require crash testing before the cars can be sold.

The cars are crash tested before they can be sold. But since the test data will be used to identify engineering changes ... the tests are performed long before vehicles go into production.

The IIHS tests aren't to determine "if" a vehicle will pass crash tests ... they are mean to rate the extent of damage or injury likely to be sustained in various scenarios.

360 camera is optional on the lowest trim level, and standard on all others.

Yeah if you're going to crunch the car you wouldn't want to buy the most expensive model (unless the more expensive model has some additional safety features--then you'd have to buy both).

Shame too as its so purdy.

If I'm remembering correctly, IIHS changed its scoring policies a few years ago such that they always check the basic level lighting offered for a particular vehicle line.

Too many manufacturers were offering what they consider safer headlights as premium upgrades and IIHS wants to encourage the safest options across all vehicles.

Would they not want/need to test all available headlights and/or features?

I don't know.

But let's say they have to limit themselves to one vehicle due to cost or time... Then in that case, I'm happy they'd choose examples that their statistics indicate are most likely to be least safe.

Anyone have an idea of when NHTSA going to complete their crash test results?

IIHS will crash test up to five vehicles! All headlight configurations will be evaluated for models. It's far more rigorous than NHTSA's testing program! I trust and place much more weight in IIHS testing since vehicles that perform poorly are quickly re-engineered and improved by automakers. Manufacturers strive for the coveted Top Safety Pick + mark!
