I have to ability to open maps on my iPhone, select a location and share it with my Tesla. Do we know when/if this will be available for Ford EVs?

This is an amateur explanation but Android Auto basically mirrors your phone in your car. Once you set up the wireless connection it has your Maps history when you open Google Maps or Waze for that matter on Android auto.

Someone with an iPhone can talk about carplay I assume it works similarly

if you are on your couch and thinking about going somewhere tomorrow. Just open your phone, plug the address it into your Google Maps and hit directions like you were going. I usually do this anyway to see how long a trip might take.

When you get in your car an hour later or tomorrow the Google Maps in your car will show your history and you can just tap that location and go.

That's an amateur explanation but there's nothing to send to your car since your phone and your car screen are the same.

Mach E’s have car play & Android Auto. You load a destination into Google or Apple Maps, connect to the car, hit “Go” on the map app. Easy! I’ve found the built in Navi on most cars is crap. Hence, why I won’t buy a car without CarPlay.

Yes, as explained there’s no need to “send” it to the car with CarPlay or Android auto available. You just open your desired maps app and recent searches etc will be there.

And the direct answer is never, because Sync cannot do that.

If you are looking for a way to skirt the issue of not paying Ford for upgrades to maps, it won't work. Just use Apple, Waze, or any other GPS app and ignore the Ford navigation.

Mine works perfectly. 2024 Mach E. iPhone with CarPlay. Set up the phone, select maps as one of the four things you can share (calls contacts and music being the others IIRC) and go. I do have to select the location in my phone but once selected I can start navigation from the machE hillbilly iPad.

I see GM is going to prevent you from using Car Play or Android Auto in their vehicles and they assume they can make a better in car interface than 15+ years of smart phones.

I remember being happy to see an Aux input with a factory stereo so I could connect my latest thinga-ma-music gadget in the vehicle

I just type the location on Google maps in my phone before I go somewhere or If I'm researching, then get in the car and it shows up in the Google maps search bar when it's connected to Android auto...easy peasy.

You don't have to "transfer" it to your car. Just open Maps in Car Play in the car and navigate.

In my GM I am logged into Google Maps in the vehicle and it works just like Tesla. You can do the trip plan on the phone and send it to the vehicle. Recent searches show up too.

Ford is implementing Android Automotive Services in the next generation, it will then have this same feature. There is a thread about the new interface on this forum. Look up Ford Digital Experience.

Google maps app in the vehicle updates every few weeks with new features. For example, when GM got access to Tesla chargers, they showed up in less than 2 weeks on the map. Here we are with Ford, one year later and still not added.

Interesting.

I was aware of "Android Automotive" being put in cars at the manufacturer level vs using Android Auto at the phone level. (Two similar names in typical Google fashion lol)

Most (click bait) articles said GM will not have Android Auto or Car Play in future vehicles but have left out the Android Automotive part.

Will check it out those threads, Thanks

RIDICULOUS.

It also allows you to download many apps from the Playstore, just like on your phone. That includes most music streaming apps, Plugshare, Waze, ABRP, etc. None of that is GM software, so it improves over time and is not connected to OTAs, just background updates like a phone.
