Hello,

Ive had the car for about a month and even at the 300W or 180W superchargers my fastest charge speed is 80KWS. This is going from 40% charge to 65% charge so its not topping off the battery.

Ford is saying that the higher speed of charging will come after the battery calibrates. Is this happening for those who had had the car longer? Does the average speed pickup after driving for 500 miles?

Thanks

To properly test charging speed, do the following:

1) Go down to 20% or so.
2) Set the charger as a destination in the navigation, ensuring instead of a flag, you see a symbol of a charger, and that the charger is within 18.6 (30km) miles.
3) Use an EA charger, or a Tesla Supercharger, or other charger that is not a shared charger.

You should see speeds of close to 150kW at first, settling into the 120s, then falling.

ok this is a good tip, I will try it out. I haven't been below 40% battery as of yet.

Charge it in your garage with your L2 EVSE while you're sleeping.
I live in a high rise building in Chicago so there's no personal charger. There's one in the garage I live in but its a 4 hour max park.

The best options for me are to charge at work and the Shell gas station that has a 180W. The work garage is slower but its free for 4 hours. The Shell station is about $12 for 25% of battery which isnt too bad, but id like to get the speed up past 80KWS so you dont have to wait as long. The BMW next to me was clocking 150KWS at the same charger

What is likely happening is you are charging at a station that has a limitation in the charging cable. The best way to test this is to go to Electrify America, IONNA, or a Tesla Supercharger with your Fast Charging Adapter and a preconditioned battery and try then. 150+ kW should be easily achieved when starting a charge below 50ish percent.

Shell Recharge is a crappy system and crappy chargers. The Shell 180 is likely a shared station, and that's why you're seeing 80. And you're paying too much....

If you're only using fast chargers, EA has locations in Chicago. 48 cents, which would be 36 cents after membership of $7 per month. 25% of a 88kWh battery is 22kWh x 36 = $7.92.

Tesla in Chicago is only in the suburbs, and more expensive.

Is there a good way to locate these type of chargers? Are they available through the Ford app?

ok thanks, there aren't too many of these in the city checking out their map, I see one that isn't too far but its in a Cosco lot. Do we know if these are available to the public?

All Costco chargers are open to the public.
Some Costco chargers are NOT part of EA's discount plan.
Open EA app, put in address. That is a Costco-owned station, not part of the EA membership discount, and cost for everyone is 46 cents. 46 x 22 = $10.12, so I suspect you're paying more at Shell...

Ford app all the way. Not only can you find chargers, but for 21 networks you can pay right inside the app, no extra apps or accounts needed.

If you're going to be fast charging regularly, you probably care about how much you're spending. Some networks - Tesla and EA to mention the two main ones - provide a discount with membership. EA's is 25%. $7.00 a month. You can join the morning of a trip, and then immediately downgrade, and it takes effect in 30 days.

In your case, regular use of fast chargers is going to add up. Do the math. Look at the nearest EA that is part of their network pricing (see previous posts in this thread). Now, take that price and figure out what the 25% discount is worth. Then figure out how many kWhs you are using in a month, and do the math. Is it worth driving to an EA that is part of their pricing, pay the $7 membership?

Note that if it is, you MUST use the EA app to activate the charger before plugging in. Ford does NOT provide any discount at any chargers. You also may want to turn off Plug and Charge if you're going to do this, because a failed EA session may revert to Ford Plug and Charge and now no discount.

Yes, you can search by name (see example below 👇). I applaud your idea to test out and understand fast charging. It will make your first road trip much more relaxing!

If you’re interested in local charging (not at home), look for “errand charging.” For example, does a local Target have charging? If you go there once a week for groceries and sundry items, charger there. If you take an hour in the store, you’re likely near full charge.

The Target near me with old but reliable 50kw units got a lot of my business before I got my home charging situation figured out. Speed didn’t matter because I was getting groceries, buying whatever was needed for the kids, and (if I needed to stretch the time) a coffee and a chapter of a book at the Starbucks inside the Target.

That Target made thousands of dollars in revenue with that charger. On groceries alone! Kids eat everything 😂.

Strongly disagree with turning off Plug & Charge.

If one is using EA's membership or Tesla's membership to get the discount, and the session fails, despite being activate by their respective apps, then Ford's Plug and Charge can kick in, thereby eliminating any discount.

Ford tested, for well over a year, providing the discount via Plug and Charge, and it worked wonderfully. However, they never rolled it out.
