I would think this would be a "write your state legislators" situation. If enough people complain that flat fees for EVs aren't fair, they may be willing to change things. Make it clear that gas taxes are basically fair because the more a person drives, the more gas they have to buy, and therefore the more taxes they will pay. But a flat fee for EVs does not fairly spread the tax by usage. It penalizes those who drive less, forcing them to subsidize those who drive more.
Umm, who do you think raised it?

Yes, it does. Being retired, I average about 6,500 miles per year. So I'm paying nearly double. I think there should be a break for retirees or anyone over 65
In Alaska seniors can get a permanent registration that no longer requires annual/semi-annual renewal. I hope they never change things for EV’s.

HawaIi has just instituted an EV road tax with a choice of choosing a flat annual fee or a per mile fee ($8 per 1000 miles.) The latter works out best if you drive your EV very little (7000 mi or less)...otherwise, the flat fee is pretty reasonable at $50.

Because we live on an island, our Mach EGT gets driven around 8,000/year and the ID BUZZ looks to be around 5,000.

It was obviously lawmakers who raised it, but that wasn't the question. It would also take them to change it again to a mileage-based program.
Why? They want the revenue.

Why would you think they don't think it is fair? Read it...
Stop being so obsequious. I'm saying that many EV drivers don't think it's fair to be charged a flat fee to recover lost gas taxes when the gas taxes, by their very nature, are greatly affected by how much one drives. Those who agree with that statement should write their state reps if they want it changed. No revenue would be lost if they did it differently, so it's not a question of the total amount of taxes collected. If others DO think it's fair, that's great for them. They need not do anything, as it's currently going the way they want.
