The dealer demo units should arrive in September/October (before even the First Edition) so you should have a chance to test drive before delivery.

I’m assuming that deposits are refundable if you refuse delivery. We’ll find out more in April once the dealer training is updated. Or at least we should find out in May at order time if the deposit is refundable.
I have to say you are an invaluable resource to this forum- thank you for all the fantastic info. I hope you get paid well, I am certain you've kept a lot of people interested in the mach e and stopped them from moving on to something else

Thanks. I’m just really excited about this vehicle! I think I’ve learned as much as I have shared on this forum. I want all of you to fulfill your reservation into orders and then love the vehicle for years to come as I know I will!! I’m on this journey with you all.

I'm not keen on having to pay more than the $500 for a GT order where I would have to tie up more money till maybe summer of 21? Doesn't seem worth it now. Are all the convert to "orders" being done at the same time, including next years GT"s?

Before we panic though, we haven’t seen ANY indication that there’s an expectation that the deposit with dealers would be greater than the $500 transferred from Ford. Granted this looks to be up to dealers technically, but there hasn’t been any indication that a dealer would ask for additional deposit. Frankly, I think a dealer doing that would lose reservation holders to other dealers.
In short, I’m not expecting to tie up more money than the $500.

But he has CASH!!!

(Sorry, Couldn’t resist trying to add some levity into this. But, more seriously, the individual bickering between four particular members is making this forum unbearable. It was easier to ignore when it was limited to 3 or 4 threads, but now it seems every thread (except maybe a thread about color options) devolves into posts like those that now are taking over this thread also.
Believe me, I’m not pointing fingers or taking sides, as I’ve agreed with points raised by each of them, but the inability to carry on discourse in any civil way is making this forum painful for some, if not all, of the other 98% of folks on it.)

Personally, I think May is too early for reservation-to-order conversions to start. With the Covid-19 stay at home still ongoing now and auto plants shut down, May 11 presents too many uncertainties for buyers’ jobs and if production will even start on schedule. I think they should start contacting folks for conversion once the assembly line starts running and Ford can show cars coming off the line.

And we still don’t have an ironclad guarantee (to the best of my knowledge) that we’d get our deposit back for the required order conversion for a car we’ve never seen, sat in or test driven. I’d like to see it in writing. It will be the first time I’ve ever put a deposit down on a car I’ve never even seen.

Don't think of May as when conversions start - think of it as the time when Ford has actually finalized details about the car, options, lease-like program, etc. It doesn't matter when you actually place the order as long as it is before the production scheduling begins - they have stated categorically that the scheduling of placed orders will be based on reservation timestamp (not order date) and model. The original calendar had the scheduling to begin in "summer" with ordering to begin in "spring".

This will vary for each of us as it doesn't sound like Ford will send out any such guarantee. What Ford has said is that they will convert your reservation deposit to a dealer deposit. It's then up to you to negotiate with - and get in writing from - your dealer that it is fully refundable if you back out before taking delivery.
This is different than the process some of us went through with the Model 3, because Tesla didn't have to deal with independently-owned dealers.
