iPhone users: Do you still get notified of a new notification when on carplay?

What's wrong with the entire upper part of the 15.5" screen switching to the Messages app for text or the Phone app for calls? How much notification do you need?

I wear an Apple watch, I want my watch to at least vibrate so I know I got something, I don't even have to look at the notification, just need the watch to vibrate.

I get all sorts of notifications like work emails and work messages and other things. Again, it's working for other people, but it's not working for me. So should I just sit down and take it because someone thinks "I shouldn't be getting notified"? Or should I actually try to make it work as intended.

I really don't understand the idea of telling people how to live their lives instead of just answering the question/ reason the thread was made. Some of you people on this website need to learn there's a time and place to share your opinions and for everything else just answer the question, if you can't answer it just don't say anything.

People here make fun of Tesla fanboys all the time but I'm active on both forums and it's just as bad here.

Literally the comment before me, some guy says it's working for him.

Then after that comment I'm being told I should be happy with just text messages and phone calls.

You can't make this up, I'm literally just trying to get it to work as it is for someone else lol.

I don't have a Apple Watch, so I can't help you with that part. But, my phone seems to behaving like yours. I do leave it in silent mode, so I may not be able to hear any buzz when it is on the rubber mat. But, I don't ever remember seeing my screen turn on from a notification while driving.

Not all apps have CarPlay functionality, and there are few that I would like to get a notification from while in the car. Text messages sent to my Google Voice number do not display in Carplay. MyQ notifications would be nice, but that is not supported by Carplay, either.

Tangential question: do you get any audio indication on the car when you receive a text message? I get the dot, but I've never gotten an audio alert. Is that because my phone is on silent?

This is exactly what I'm talking about. The phone screen should turn on, even if on silent. I tested this with my friend. He did not wear his apple watch, but his phone still turned the screen on even if it was on silent. With my car, it's not doing that. It's ignoring all notifications and I only know if I got a notification if I pick up my phone and have the screen turn on. Apple watch or not.

Do not disturb is off throughout the whole process. This is exactly what I'm talking about. It shouldn't be this way, but it is. But with my friends car it's behaving normally.

So now I know more people than I are having this issue, but someone else said they are getting notifications.

I don't think it's normal behavior because my friends car with carplay he still got notifications. That's why I'm trying to get to the bottom of this.

Clearly there is a difference in opinion here: yours vs the developers of CarPlay.

Their intent seems to to be to have the big 15.5 screen display notifications to minimize driver distraction, i.e. no need to pick up and play with the phone since it all appears on the big screen that is easily read by the driver.

Your intent seems to be that you want the big screen, your phone, and your watch to all compete for your attention when any notification comes in.

I recommend you take it up with the programmers of Apple CarPlay.

I think the CarPlay programmers got it right.

Yeah except that's not how carplay works at all if we have 3 examples of it working for other people.

No, carplay only has specific apps that can show up on the display not everything. You're wrong there.

Wrong again, I just would appreciate a buzz on my watch, who says I'm going to get into an accident because of my watching buzzing? This is especially frustrating since it's confirmed working for other people.

I don't have to, they have it set up right. They have "Do not disturb while driving" as a setting, and the user can toggle it on or off. Mine is off. You're wrong three times now.

I am very suprised you would want any distraction when driving, in the Netherlands when you just hold a phone in your hand you can get a fine and you should.

A watch buzz on my wrist isn't distracting enough to cause an accident.

If it is then I shouldn't be driving in the first place.

You’re asking about app notifications on the sync 4 screen. Those do not appear, not on this car nor any other car with CarPlay I’ve owned. The person you were referring to was saying they still get Apple Watch notifications when their iPhone is in CarPlay.

CarPlay has a limited number of apps available and also a limited amount of notifications. Phone calls and text messages are allowed with an audible message deliver and voice response only for the texts, no reading. The reason for that is to reduce the opportunities for distracted driving. In your case, you seem to want to know when emails or other notices come in from other apps. Those apps are either going to have to jump through the hoops of becoming CarPlay apps or your going to have to figure out why your Apple Watch isn’t giving you notice of the app notifications. But it’s not a Mach-e issue. It’s a CarPlay and Apple issue.

No I’m not. I’m asking about phone / watch notifications while connected to CarPlay. Other CarPlay vehicles, the notification still shows on phone / watch.

This is why I made the thread, to verify or help isolate what to look for. And it worked, some people were actually helpful.

I’m well aware of this, I don’t need to be taught a lesson. I’m trying to get something that has been working before, and should be working now, to work. If people have the time to lecture me to feel better about themselves, they should try telling people who actually drink and drive instead of telling someone who simply wants their watch to work as intended.

I’m pretty sure you have Bluetooth connected to the car and iPhone, right? If so, you probably have “Do Not Disturb While Driving” selected in your Do Not Disturb settings. It automatically turns on when it connects to your car’s Bluetooth. If you turn that off, then you should get the notifications from Apps that support CarPlay functionality.

There’s also a similar setting in your CarPlay’s setting screen (on the CarPlay app on screen, not Ford or iOS on the phone) that does something similar. Check there too.

I checked both my phone and the carplay car, do not distrub while driving is turned off. but I still don't get any notifications. It acts as though it do not disturb is on.
