Last week I went on a road trip from San Jose, CA to Salt Lake City, UT. If you have a regular battery and do not want to get stranded in Nevada, I would recommend the following stops, all using the Electrify America charging stations:

In California: 100% at home / Sacramento / Truckee
In Nevada: Fernley / Winemucca / Elko / West Wendover
In Utah: Salt Lake City

That represents 7 stops each way which was too much in my view but necessary to reach destination. Careful planning is needed in Nevada where stations are few and far between. I got stranded in Lovelock, NV where stations are being installed but not working yet although they appear in the Ford Pass app! Had to spend $400.00 to have the Mach E towed to Winemucca, NV. I"ll get reimbursed by AAA, I think.

In Park City, UT while 21 F outside, the battery would lose 10 miles of range per night and the maximum range I got was 123 miles at 80% SoC. I didn't know the range reduction was going to be so severe. Good thing I could find an EVGo station in Kimball Junction which is very close to Park City.

As far as the Mach E itself, it performed flawlessly, the powertrain is solid as a rock. I only regret the absence of a full-size spare tire. I had a devastating puncture on the return trip on the border of Utah/Nevada and had to have the car towed once again to a shop in Wendover, UT where the tire was pronounced "beyond repair". Good thing they had a used tire, king of bald, to only allow me to get back home. After this experience, I'm looking to get a full-size spare.

The trip was 1600 miles and it amount to a crash course on the Mach E for sure. Finally, I don't think the Mach E Select, with a regular battery, is the right car for this trip but that's what I had. At the time I placed the reservation, I look into the extended range but they were much more expensive.

thnx for the trip report. We go that direction a few times a year. I recall seeing Walmart’s along the way, did you try any of those? Sorry you had to tow twice.
I think we will stick to our small RV For that trip, even with extended power.?

what happened to the tire? A blowout Or a nail?

You are very welcome. A picture of the object that punctured the tire follows below:

Just a little bar with two screws at the ends. It entered the tire like a projectile and made a noise similar to hitting a pothole but I knew it was not a pothole because I would have seen it on road if that was the case. I lost pressure on the tire in question almost instantaneously and had to move quickly to the shoulder. The wheel rim was already low on the ground as quickly got to the tire to verify the damage.

One cannot see this kind of debris on the road and take evasive action, I had no chance, never saw it. There are way too much debris on the highways and two wonderful guys from Nevada DOT told me they had seen punctures due to wrenches, among other unexpected culprits. They helped me take the wheel out, plug the tire and put it back in place. Although I could have proceeded with the plugs, there were two because of the size of the hole, I don't trust plugs as they tend to leak ... so asked AAA for the tow truck.

As I mentioned in the original post, I'm getting a full-size spare tire. That's safety. It 's a good thing that I had all the tools but I felt guilty as I almost purchased a spare tire before going on the trip. There was just me and my wife on this trip.

Hopefully this clarifies the puncture event.

wow, well glad you got through that without a major tire exploding. Good driving.
there are so many motorhomes and loaded trucks on Hwy 80. Ive been in an Audi for 11 years and Never gave road hazards much thought, but I know I will with the mache, not having any experience with electric cars. It’s going to take a while to get used to it.

The compact spare out of a 12-19 range rover evoque fits the mach e. It takes up quite a bit of space, but i pack it on long road trips. I've been stranded before too and do not like it.

Agree that the SR is not as good an option ER. With the ER how many less stops do you think you would have needed? Aside from this trip, how many long range trips do you take in a year? Or is the care 90% for around town, charge at home?

I Neve went on a road trip again. This trip left me so anxious that it took. a good month to recover. Since then, I've been using the MME around. town only. My wife also refuses to go on road trips anymore.

I got laughed off the forum about 8 months ago for suggesting that a spare tire should be included. I was told that flat tires are things of đź‘˝'s.

Some of us get them at least once a year and calling a tow when I could change the tire in less than 1/10th of the time is just dumb.
