Or how's LG's battery compare to Tesla? Density, degradation etc, is there any detail info available?

The one plus point of a bev is that the motors don't care about where the electrons come from, so given advances in battery tech it shouldn't be that hard to update the battery pack in the future, the problem of course is that the next best thing in battery tech always seems to be in a permanent state of being available in the next few years :(.

I suspect the warranty on the battery pack will have long since expired on the mach-e before a suitable upgrade is ready, until we move into easily mass produced graphene batteries I would imagine we will just get small improvements to existing chemistry that would result in some gains but unless you need every last mile of range everyday will make minimal difference to the average mach-e owners.

I'd actually put faster L3 charging times as a higher priority than range (although range is big too). Charging stops on many interstate routes are often more dictated by charger spacing than range anyway. But six 10-15 minute charging stops along the way would sure be a helluva lot more palatable than six 30-40 minute ones.

Good Grief --- how far do you drive a day?
At my age, the best I can handle in a car with close to 300 miles range is about a 1 hour lunch / charge break and then stay at a place with destination chargers that top it off while I sleep.

That's our usual road trip (Denver-Vegas). 785 miles, which we do in daylight hours with 2 gas stops (and one lunch) normally. But in our upcoming MME AWD ER, ABRP shows 6 stops of around 30 minutes each.

Granted, that's pushing the limits for a day. In fact the extra 2+ hours it'll take in the MME probably makes it a 2-day drive now. I just wish there were a hotel/motel near the midpoint to where I could do an overnight L2 charge. But so far not finding anything acceptable. Pretty small towns through most of that Utah stretch (until you get so far south that you might as well just finish the drive to Vegas).

Keep in mind that 300 miles (270 in the AWD) doesn't mean 300 miles of high speed interstate driving each leg. At 75+ MPH, it's realistically more like ~200 (or ~180 in the AWD).

Better, but don't ask for a source on that assessment!

That doesn't look that tough. How about On Us-40 to Provo, about 475 miles and if you keep your speed down just a lunch stop enroute and Provo has a Marriott with both J-1772 and Tesla Destination Chargers to top you back up to 98KWH while you sleep.

With only about 380 miles left to Vegas, you can let it fly down I-15 with just a potty break/charge.

I thought Tesla was making efforts to do unique battery technologies that aren't commodity? Isn't that what the whole "battery day" thing is about?

Help me understand how you would need six charging stops for 785 miles. The MME should have better range than my current Bolt. To go 785 miles, conservatively I would stop at 175, 350, 520, and 690 without any concern about running out. My last trip from Wisconsin to Chicago (300 miles round trip). I drove ~70 mph while on the interstate and still had a 220 mile range/charge at that speed. My 175 mile segment estimate leaves me a pretty good margin.

No, doesn't make any sense to go out of the way all the way up to Provo. That would add 110 unnecessary miles. Don't wanna keep speed down either. Not looking to have to make compromises like that with my new $60k car. The I-70/I-15 route is a nice, easy, direct route without much wasted backtracking. Which is why we can do it all in one day during daylight hours in our Escape.

But we will try the Mach-e one time after we get it, just for the challenge and the experience. After that, I'm sure we'll be back to the Escape just because it can do the route far quicker (and cheaper).

And even if there were a Marriott in Richfield or Beaver (for instance) that had a charger, frankly it would cost more than a good-enough Best Western or something + an EA charge. It's usually the more expensive hotels that have chargers, not the more affordable ones. We stay in nicer hotels at final destinations where we spend some time, but for a quick sleep stop in the middle of a long drive it's just not worth it.
