Our garage setup is such that the cable between wall charger and MME in our garage is in a 'high traffic' area.

I have enough cable on home charger to be able to route through garage ceiling joists. Has anyone seen a setup where you can have charging cable dangle down from celing, and then retract out of the way (on a spring loaded cable) when not in use?

Did not want to engineer such a solution if someone already sells such a setup. Seems like a common problem.

I wanted the same but could find nothing.
I was looking for something to coil the cable when finished charging so it would hang above the charge door .

I have seen plenty of pictures on the web of this kind of setup. They normally use one of those tool balance things, Sorry can't remember the name at this moment. Check this link out:

I set this up for both of my chargers using some pulleys, paracord and empty paint cans filled with rocks. I’ve got open joists and fairly high peak. Just enough rocks in the paint buckets to counterbalance the weight of the charging cable. Knots in the paracord where it meets the pulley in order to prevent retracting up into the joisting too high. I think each setup cost me about $12.

I think this is great. People are spending much, much more to get fancy solutions, and you're using rocks, paint buckets, pulleys, and ropes with knots. ? ? ? ? ?

While we haven't had the need for a retractor, we mounted the charger in the front middle of a 3 bay garage. It's inaccessible from the right side (where the Mach-E is parked) when the F-150 is in the garage, since the F-150 is parked right up to the wall, bumper touching. We routed the cable along the edge of the floor, padding it with foam where it went against a sharp area, like the electrical box. Then it comes out along the side of a shelf, where it's strapped to the corner of the shelf unit. It then sits in a 5 gallon bucket, awaiting the vehicle. We simply unplug, and put the nozzle into the bucket, and then slide it a bit away from the vehicle so parking is easy. This prevents the nozzle from being damage, from getting wet with melting snow / rain, and from the F-150 running it over, worse the F-150 could do is nudge the bucket.

We picked that location for the charger so it could reach all 3 bays if needed, right now the left bay has a boat in it. If we get the boat out of there, then the Mach-E would go there, and the cord reaches. If we get an F-150 Lightning, then we would park that in the middle bay and the cord reaches.

Thank You. A little basic redneck engineering to go with my super techie car. Gotta have some yin with my yang.

In a former lifetime I had a spot welder mounter overhead on a retractor/balancer. They come in all sizes.

Here ya go. Cheap and easy if your garage ceiling is unfinished.

And me standing underneath it just to show that they are high enough to not hit my head.
