I've had my taxes ready for a while now but waiting on TurboTax to have 8911 ready. They originally said it should be ready on 2/17 but I ran an update today and now it says 3/17. Not sure if this will be the same for all tax software or just TurboTax.

Form 8911 is showing up in my TurboTax but it does show 'do not file'. I'm claiming $1k for the connected charger and install. I believe this is because at this point I'm already getting back all my federal taxes. I installed Solar on my house last year so its likely I will not owe any federal taxes. Both my wife and I spent most of the last year unemployed. I am waiting for 1099s for investments so my numbers will change. So maybe the form/credit will come into play.

I just completed H&R Block. Can't e-file because the workaround is using form 3800, which they do prompt you with. I added form 8911 in there for more verification since I have to mail it anyway. As others have mentioned, you could also e-file without 3800 and then amend your return with 8911, but hopefully filing early can still get me paid before most people are filling...

Solar credit gets applied last and the remainder gets carried over. You may need to update that particular form.

Thanks. I've heard it both ways whether or not Solar will carry over. I hope it does as I might loose a couple grand if it doesn't.

Yep, I just filed my taxes with FreeTaxUSA. Super easy and they weren't missing any of the required forms.
Thank you for the information! I pay for TurboTax Deluxe every year and even bought H&R Block Deluxe last night to try and get a better timeline. I just submitted my taxes via FreeTaxUSA and it was the easiest solution (except for W-2 upload/import) I have used and no delay with the forms. Plus they caught something that TT didn't recommend which added another $200 to our return.

A lot of people swear by TurboTax, and I'm not going to tell anyone they shouldn't. I've used it a lot over the years, and I've also used H&R Block, TaxAct, and others. FreeTaxUSA has been my go to for the past several years because it never seems to be missing any forms and is substantially cheaper than the others. I haven't encountered a down side.

I downloaded the H&R software over the weekend. Haven’t started my tax return yet but noticed there is an update coming out on February 17.

I tried to do it, but couldn't figure out how to make it to give me my expected credit, it always comes back with 0.

Reentered my numbers into FreeTaxUSA and got everything. Will file electronically on this site.

I always scratch my head when people say "I've heard".

Go to the source. See bolded line below.

https://www.energy.gov/eere/solar/homeowners-guide-federal-tax-credit-solar-photovoltaics

IF THE TAX CREDIT EXCEEDS MY TAX LIABILITY, WILL I GET A REFUND?
This is a nonrefundable tax credit, which means you will not get a tax refund for the amount of the tax credit that exceeds your tax liability. Homeowners may get a tax refund at the end of the year due to the tax credit, if the reduction in tax liability means there was overpayment during the year. This can often occur when employers deduct taxes for employees over the course of the year. However, such refund is still limited by the taxpayer’s total tax liability. However, you can carry over any unused amount of tax credit to the next tax year.

It's showing as "do not file" because it's not ready until 3/17/22. If you want to use TurboTax to do your return, wait until then and rerun the software.

In addition, what you "get back" isn't the issue for the solar credit, but it could be the issue for the vehicle and the charger install credits, which are non-refundable and cannot be carried forward. If you true tax liability before these credits is zero, then you lost out. That's unfortunate. We did a Roth conversion on 12/31/21 to fully utilize our credits.
