I have been driving the MME for about 10 months. I cannot count the number of 'haters' who must find some reason to ridicule the EV segment. From electrical grid issues to battery disposal the hateful attitude is getting worse as the influence of EVs becomes more pronounced. The attached news is for those losing sleep over what are we going to do with spent batteries. Sleep well! Charged EVs | Ascend Elements to open battery recycling facility in Georgia - Charged EVs

You know itā€™s much better for the environment than most recycling when plants are opening in the states rather than sending it all to a third world country to ā€œrecycleā€.

Wasn't tesla turning old car batteries into power grid battery backup systems (non consumer)? There's some cells that are dead dead after a car's life, but many can still be used for less demanding tasks.

Iā€™m hoping by the end of life, there will be a solution to just put my own two 99kwh batteries to use as a whole home backup. Let my Solar production go there first before sending energy back to the grid. With almost 200Kwh available, Iā€™d have about a weekā€™s worth of power to use before I even had to go start the propane generator.

A company is already doing this at commercial scale with Leaf batteries

Also good luck getting a gas pump to work during a Texas sized electrical blackout

I mean they are all valid issues to consider. Currently most of our batteries get sent to China for recycling. Where they remove the Good cells and sell them back to us lol.
We donā€™t have a good system in place to recycle millions of car batteries yet.

California's electrical grid can reach max capacity several times in summer During peak hours. You can pretty much guarantee those peak prices are going to skyrocket in the near future to prevent charging vehicles (the current highest Iā€™ve seen is around $0.58/kWh)
solar is great but its peak production is at noon which doesnā€™t help peak hours very much. Plus they are trying to convince people that adding a rediculous tax to solar owners makes sense.

now repurposing used car batteries as home energy storage would be fantastic and help offset those two issues. As long as they donā€™t burn your house down haha.

Ford Teams With Redwood Materials to Create First Pathways for Recycling End-of-Life Batteries From Electrified Ford and Lincoln Vehicles; Kicks Off in California

Ford Motor Company and Redwood Materials, a leading battery materials company, are announcing a collaboration to create pathways for end-of-life Ford and Lincoln electrified vehicle batteries so essential materials can be recycled to make locally made battery cells.
As part of the pilot, Ford will support Redwood in collecting lithium-ion (Li-ion) and nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries from end-of-life, electrified Ford and Lincoln vehicles in California. Redwood will work directly with dealers and dismantlers to find and recover end-of-life battery packs and safely package, transport, and recycle these batteries. Redwood will then return high-quality, recycled materials for domestic battery production, helping to reduce the need to mine and import raw materials such as lithium.

California is one of the most mature electric vehicle markets in the U.S., so when the first major wave of EVs begin to retire, it will start there. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that approximately 42 percent of all-electric vehicles in the U.S. are registered in The Golden State.
ā€œWe are excited to be strengthening our collaboration with Redwood Materials to identify solutions for electric vehicle batteries that have reached the end of their useful life,ā€ said President and CEO Jim Farley. ā€œI want to thank [Redwood CEO] JB Straubel and the Redwood team for bringing their world-class technology and know-how to our joint efforts.ā€
Redwood also recycles materials from consumer electronics, manufacturing and renewable storage operations.

Creating recycling options for end-of-life batteries is a crucial step in Ford and Redwoodā€™s commitment from Sept. 2021 to making electric vehicles more sustainable and affordable for Americans by localizing the complex supply chain network, ramping lithium-ion recycling, and increasing U.S. battery production.

The pilot follows other recent Ford announcements about American manufactured electric vehicles and battery components, including the creation of Blue Oval City, a $5.6 billion mega campus in Stanton, Tenn., a total of three new BlueOval SK battery plants in the Midwest, and the doubling of F-150 Lightning production to 150,000 vehicles annually.

I have solar with a Powerwall storage system. Unfortunately, each Powerwall management system only allows for a 5 KWh transfer in or out. After sunset, if you use more than 5 KWh anything over that must come from some other source likely the grid. And if you are generating and not using much power, anything over 5 KWh will go back to the grid. Bummer for those who are attempting to manage usage of solar power. But it really helps with MME feeding!

So each power wall install canā€™t be over 5kwh? Can you buy more than one power wall for your house? Run them in series? I wonder where the bottle neck is that limits this.

Yes, you can have multiple battery storage units, even a mixture of manufacturers. I'm not sure why the Tesla Powerwall is limited at 5 KWh but certain there is a reason that makes technical sense. Other manufacturers may have a different system and greater or less power flow rates.

I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that it is a technical reason. Sounds more like a bogus utility restriction. ?ā€ā™‚ ?

Tesla Powerwall 2 Datasheet. This does not explain why but summarizes the technical operations of the Powerwall 2 storage system.
