BENGT HALVORSON SEPTEMBER 18, 2020

The ID.4 electric crossover isn’t just the first of Volkswagen’s dedicated mass-production EVs to be available in the U.S., or the first electric SUV from VW.
Although Volkswagen had given some early indications that the ID.3, which won’t be offered in the U.S., would be the volume model of the MEB lineup, a recent presentation and formatted interview from VW show that the ID.4 will play second fiddle to the ID.4.

Volkswagen is aiming to produce a total of 1.5 million electrified vehicles per year by 2025, and it expects the ID.4 to account for around a third of this total—500,000 per year globally by then, when the brand will have local production of the ID.4 in Germany, in China, and in the U.S.

“The ID.4 will thus become the driving force behind our reorientation a hundred thousand times over,” said Ralf Brandstätter, the CEO of the Volkswagen brand. As the executive put it, the ID.4 marks “the e-offensive and the SUV-offensive of the Volkswagen brand—both combined in one vehicle.”

That coordinates with what Volkswagen of America sales and marketing chief Duncan Movassaghi told Green Car Reports last month—that the ID.4 won’t be a rival for the Tesla Model Y so much as for mainstream internal-combustion models like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4.

The ID.3 and ID.4 are just the start, though. The Škoda EnyaQ, the Audi Q4 E-Tron, and Seat Cupra el-Born are all due next year and will be based on the same MEB platform.

By the middle of the decade, the pace of fully electric model introductions is slated to pick up, and Volkswagen said that it expects the entire Volkswagen Group to build about 20 million MEB-based electric vehicles by 2029.

U.S. production of the ID.4 and one other model are due to start in Chattanooga in 2022. That’s the time VW has hinted that the eagerly anticipated model based on the ID Buzz, a van-like model with nods to the vintage Microbus, is due.

It took Nissan nearly 10 years to build 500,000 Leaf electric cars. Tesla hit 500,000 Model 3 sedans in less than three years. At the rate at which EV adoption is expected to accelerate, making 500,000 a year by the ID.4’s fourth full year of production sounds entirely doable—if, that is, the ID.4 is received well.

Check back for a lot more on this important electric model, due to be fully revealed on September 23.

It's great to have goals, but with almost all manufacturers except honda & chrysler touting a move to BEV's there are 2 significant constraints: consumer demand and batteries. Most consumers are too lazy to change how they do things now- they don't want to have to learn about charging or worry about planning ahead. On the battery side despite the plans to build more manufacturing facilities raw materials availability is a major issue to be addressed. These aren't unsurmountable problems, but inertia is a powerful thing.

Interesting how quickly the ID.4 went just being the secondary big brother of the ID.3 (being made because those pesky Americans insist on buying bigger vehicles), to apparently now becoming the primary version they think will sell the most. ☺

To bad the ID.3 doesn't come to NA because it would sale a lot here in Canada, especially in Quebec. I know that customers have made pressure on their VW dealer to get one, and dealer making pressure on VW Canada but nothing is doing. ID.4 will also be a good seller here because people like SUV now.

Isn't the ID.4 a small crossover/SUV?

So you don't want a crossover either?? That's getting to be a long list of things you don't like about the Mach-E.

There are other BEV sedans to pick from, and some new ones on the way, that will probably satisfy you better.

The chevy bolt is a hatch, as is the Nissan Leaf, both sold in the US in a BEV form.

I have to disagree with your global statement. Let me rephrase your statement: "I think the Bolt and Leaf suck compared to what I want and for the kind of driving I do." They do not suck for everyone. Actually, I enjoyed my Leaf and love my Bolt. My son has been driving a Leaf for nine years and has only lost about 11% of his range after 60K+ miles. Neither my son nor I do road trips in our EVs like you do. I agree that they might suck for you and your specific needs but that does not mean that they suck in general or they suck for everyone. There is pretty complete information available about what various EVs do and don't do and that should be enough information for people to make informed judgements about which EV (if any) would be good/bad for them. I don't understand why a Mach-E would be a good match for your needs/interests/preferences given your many statements of things you dislike about the car. I think you like the Grabber Blue color but it is not clear that you like anything else about it since you have complained about its exterior design (e.g., "don't want an SUV), have complained about its interior design (e.g., stupid to have an on/off button or any other buttons), don't like its charging system, don't like its range, don't like its height, don't like its tech system, etc. It sounds like you would like an electric Mustang E-550 type of design with a Tesla power train and operating system. I hope you can get that some day.
