If they manage payments/permissions as well as they roll out updates, we'll have nothing to worry about.

I hereby claim the rights to "Mustang Mach-E 365" or "MME 365", "Ford-as-a-Service" or "FaaS". A little IT guy humor... (but seriously, Ford, if you want those terms, I will accept royalties)... ? ?

I bought a GE refrigerator and they put a chip in water filters now that deactivate the water and ice maker until you replace it with a OEM GE water filter with a chip. This is basically a six month ongoing subscription. Businesses will keep going with this model until it is untenable.

I never installed the water filter in my GE ice maker. Works fine.

Well this is some real falling sky nonsense.
Not really. How many times have products that people have paid for stopped working because the company was sold, turned them off or wanted to force you into upgrades? A great many things in modern cars require ongoing software support to work, and specifically, work safely: infotainment, safety suite, navigation, remote start, etc.

Almost every meaningful software purchase comes with an up-front cost followed by an annual maintenance/support fee.

I'm sure some flavor of this is coming... In the context of the MME, BC is the obvious example along with Navigation which are already subscriptions.

It's not clear to me that there will be a long list of existing features that will become subscriptions... New features that don't exist today... maybe but I'll go on record as being doubtful.
Sounds more like car owners are leasing their own vehicles than anything else. No thanks

It makes sense that something like BC would be subscription, even though I don't like it.

It doesn't make sense that something like heated seats would be.

Toyota tried that. They walked it back. Until it happens, I'm not going to worry about it.

BC, maybe. I don't like it, but I can see it.

Most of the comfort features we're paying for when buying a trim level, or ANY SAFETY features should not be a subscription.

Keep in mind that in our navigation, there is a connected component that has a a 3 year free model.

When it's over, if you don't pay it will revert to embedded navigation with no connected navigation services (traffic). It includes yearly map updates and such.

Says nothing about staying current on charging locations or not.

https://www.ford.com/support/how-tos/sync/sync-4/what-are-the-sync-4-navigation-options/
Since my Job 1 MME was delivered 03/05/2021 with maps that were 2 YEARS OUT OF DATE I'll stick with my Garmin that dets 4 updates PER YEAR FOR FREE.

I think it's clear that things like Navigation will be charged for.
Not so clear to me. Not saying none will charge, but... automakers used to always charge for it, but with free navigation from android auto, etc... which often does a better job, they have baked down and it makes it more difficult for automakers to charge for it, or if they do to at least make it reasonably priced.
