Sounds like it's time to find a fast charger near a local flower and/or ice cream shop to make amends.
Woh! I have been following the macheforum.com and recall the flip down being described for level 3. So, user error indeed plus for anyone out there, I would recommend to use a level3 charger local to see how it works. I did that and was surprised how not what I thought it would activate was. Sorry you were on a trip to discover this now... but at least you arrived at 1 mile. Wow!

This is a good reminder to let your friends and family know about the difference between lvl2 and lvl3 charging. It's not yet common knowledge.

This talk about apps…

The in car navigation is REALLY good. Just use that.
No, it's not. There are many issues with it. You should never rely on 1 source. Use 4. Ford navigation, ABRP, PlugShare, and GoogleMaps.

Thank you. 100% operator error. Ugh! I never noticed the little flip down cover that allows the rapid charger to connect. Wow did I learn that the hard way!
Yeah, I was going to say it's weird that the Target chargers didn't fit your car...I immediately thought "did he not flip down the CCS cover?"
THAT would have solved your issue! Tell your wife you're very sorry and apologize to the car, too ?

Yup,
My routine is to map the trip in ABRP, check the suggested stops in Plugshare, then plug the route into the Ford nav. Adding Google to the mix couldn’t hurt.

GoogleMaps allows you to remove charging from the equation, and remove Ford's navigation from it. Ford's navigation historically has had issues.

On our recent trip, Ford's navigation recommended 5 charging stops, a significant detour out of the way to charge for one of them, and a detour of 6 miles off the highway and back on further with zero explanation of why. GoogleMaps showed us significantly fewer miles, and no detours. Makes you look into the WHY.

ABRP showed us with 3 stops. That was correct. It required charging at the last stop to 95%.

No way. The in-dash nav is quite excellent, particularly for someone new to EVs. I use apps, so don't get me wrong, I do see their utility. But telling people to start with apps is like telling them to run before they've mastered walking.

The in-dash nav will get you from point A to point B with charging very very well. If I'm travelling without the need for charging, I'll use Apple Maps. When I know I'll need charging, I use the in-dash system. Before I leave, however, I do check in with Plugshare and ABRP. But I already know how to walk.

That's... not better. LOL

Sure, you'll get from A to B.

But in the example I gave, Ford wanted me to stop 5 times versus 3. 13 hours and 45 minutes it estimated versus 12:26 with ABRP. That's a huge difference. https://www.macheforum.com/site/thr...ordpass-by-itself-is-a-really-bad-idea.15878/

Still, you have to consider the context of this thread. OP's wife is demanding they return the car because of an operator error that we'd all bet he would not make again. His error was not based on bad advice from the Nav, and yet, everyone is talking about using an app to get him home.

The apps would not have told him to flip the CCS port down so he could fast charge, so we're addressing a problem he didn't have.

Keep in mind that not all states have adequate numbers of DC fast charging. Indiana has 4 offering charging at above 100 kw at this time. All are EA. This makes the advice on planning ahead all the more important. It also reminds us that there is a "learning curve" to changing to a BEV. Fortunately, the author did get home without a tow.

No, the OP failed to adequately PLAN his trip. That includes how to charge and where to charge. They go hand in hand. Giving him the best tools to make an intelligent plan for his trip, and never have his wife feeling insecure about owning the vehicle again.

ABRP gives much more flexibility than Ford's navigation.
