Amazingly sad number of salvage titles available for looking at and even purchasing some of them approaching 20 grand

When I see the sad story of someone in a bad crash and they’re wondering if they have a total vehicle I always like to look at this site to see what they’re getting for our little pony…… it is one of the most expensive salvage totaled vehicles out there …..if that makes any of you people in crashes feel any better. Obviously the expensive sensors and easily accessible electronic module parts are in high demand and value

Jes sayin. Sometimes a total loss isn’t really a total loss and your insurance company makes out like Banditos

I wonder if they know how dangerous the battery pack is and if they know how to put it out once it starts burning because it can burn for two or three days. I predict we’re gonna see a bunch of auto recycling sites have spontaneous fires due to electric vehicles I think it recently happened here in Phoenix now that were up above 105° daily

EVs have been around for ten years if there was going to be an uptick in fires at pull a part locations due to HVBs it would have already happened.

You always have first refusal on your totaled vehicle with your insurance company and the insurance company had to pay out because somebody did something stupid, they aren't necessarily making out.

hmmm actually no. They are less likely to catch on fire than gas cars... even after accidents.

Fire Protection Engineer here, with lots of experience in designing buildings/systems to protect from EV fires. It is true that EVs are less likely to catch on fire than their ICE counterparts (simply more ignition sources and a tank full of a flammable liquid), but the problem is once an EV does catch on fire, it's much more difficult to deal with than an ICE. Most EV fires are due to thermal runaway which is when the battery begins to self-heat uncontrollably causing combustion and a subsequent fire. Thermal runaway can begin do to simply a malfunction of the battery or EV component, or it can begin from a separate ignition source which caused a small fire then causing thermal runaway. Most non-collision EV fires start from thermal runaway, but all inevitably (unless put out super quick) go through thermal runaway. The part which makes EV fires so difficult to control is no amount of water will stop thermal runaway. Firefighters and building systems are trained/designed to provide LOTS and LOTS of water on an EV fire, but this is simply to prevent the thermal runaway from spreading elsewhere. The current approach is to provide water until thermal runaway stops naturally. Thermal runaway releases energy from the battery, and this thermal runaway will stop once the battery enters a low state of charge. As you might have guessed, a battery at 100% charge will go through thermal runaway for some time, but a battery at 10% charge likely is so low on energy it could never go into thermal runaway in the first place, no matter what you do to it. I say likely because 10% of a Hummer EV battery vs 10% of a Chevy Bolt obviously have drastically different energy states.

We watched a Tesla S, an older one burn for about 3 hours In a parking lot from our office window on the fifth floor. I think they were doing exactly what you said just putting enough water on it to get it to cycle down. They cleared out the area pretty deep to keep people from breathing it and they all had on full masks and oxygen systems. Beautiful colored flames by the way kind of like those Christmas logs you buy …

Has there been any MME which caught fire before from this (non-accident related)?
