I just got back from a short trip of 96 miles. It was primarily interstate driving going 70mph using Blue Cruise. I averaged 3.7 miles per kwh. It got me thinking about what this trip will cost compared to what it would cost in my 2021 F150 Lariat Powerboost.

At 3.7miles per kwh the math suggests I used 25.95 kw to make the trip. I charge at home off peak hours for $0.11 per kwh. This trip would cost $2.85 in the Mach.

My F150 is an awesome truck, the best I've owned. In similar trips I've gotten 24 mpg's, sometimes better. If I average 24mpg's for 96 miles, that would take 4 gallons of gas for the round trip. Fuel here is around $4.69 per gallon. The trip would cost $18.76 in the F150.

So, if my math is correct, the Mach costs $2.85 and the F150 costs $18.76 for the trip. That's a huge difference. I realize if I take an extended road trip and have to use public charging at the typical $0.43 per kwh it would cost more. This particular trip would cost $11.15 which is still a considerable difference. I'm sure this nothing new to most of you but today was the first time I gave it any thought.

Math misses the loss from the house to the car, but otherwise might be correct if that's the fully loaded electricity cost.

Big savings for a 100 mile trip. Now extrapolate that for your annual milage...how long before the total cost of ownership (or at least fueling) puts the Mach-E above the F150?

If you want to be even more impressed, go solar at home. It now seems odd when filling my gas audi while watching the numbers roll by going k-Ching, k-Ching….! That’s a wad of money for decades?. I rarely drive the Audi anymore.

We have had O charging costs and zero home e bills. For the last four months. Free charging because it’s been sunny 90% of the days. One winter month was $21 for total electricity. Impressive, yes!

What was your cost to have the solar panel installed? I've considered it but haven't gone as far as getting a quote, yet.

It varies greatly by state. I am in Mass which is very pro solar, my first 24 panels cost me 24k, and I earned ALL of that back in 4.25 years, and have made money on them since then. Plus I have not paid for "energy" for my car or house in the last 7 years. I had an additional 8 panels installed for about 8k a few years later, and that also paid back in full in 4 years. I know in Maine payback was about 10 years. I would advise call a local installer where you own the panels. They will give you an honest quote, with an honest payback time period.

I charge mine at home. I have solar. Right now my electric bill sits at -$715 (yes, that's a minus sign) for the year. My year ends Oct 31 so that number will creep closer to zero as time goes by.

So, I see no fuel costs, at least not yet this year. (I've had my car for 14 months and have yet to pay for fuel).

My 7 kw installation cost $37k. There's a 30% fed government rebate. So my out of pocket was $25,900.

Now, most people look at the payback in years. In my thinking that's the wrong way to look at it. Let me explain...

My electric bill averaged $308 per month. If I eliminate that $308 per month that's an annual savings of $3,696. If you look at the payback in years it would be seven years. However, I look at it as an investment. I invest $25,900 and get back $3,696 per year. That's a whopping 13.3% return per year. Show me any SAFE investment that returns 13.3% year and I'll jump at it. In fact, I'd put all of my savings and retirement money into that kind of investment. On top of that electric prices go up over time, never down, so I save MORE as time marches on. It's a no brainer.

If your monthly electric bill is less then you'd get less of a return. But even $150/month electric bill would get a return of 7% per year if it were reduced to zero.

We have a smaller, efficient home. Our ROI on solar last time I looked was 11 years, which we were doubtful we'd stay in it that long. Now with the home charger that may be turned up on its ear, but we'll see how things pan out in the next year.
