Thanks I had misread that then. Any guess on what the AWDs would need in the rear given that all MMEs must already have a motor on the rear axle and there is no driveshaft?
not a clue

Agreed. Either the reporting about pack design isn't right, or the marketing team felt that this inaccuracy was the best way to visually convey range options.
Yeah, but I am pretty sure jalopnik did a story on the battery in the MME late last year and said that the ER modules were definitely under the rear seats and that the SR just left compartment empty.

Again, the Ford website clearly states that the AWD motor somehow takes away some room; as someone said maybe it requires another electrical component that raises the floor in the back.

Early reporting on the battery packs indicated that both packs use the same enclosure. In the standard battery, the upper level of the enclosure is unoccupied. In either case, the upper level is under the rear bench cushion.

Though unlikely, this case design may have changed. Or there's something else besides the pack that is taking up the storage volume.
If both packs use same enclosure there must be a different explanation for the difference in trunk space reduction. As you say perhaps the casing may have changed - I am hoping its a documentation error but this late in the game, they had plenty of chance to correct it and if they have not the difference must be real

Based on this post the area of the trunk behind the seats is roughly 1400 square inches (not including area behind wheel wells). Eyeballing the height of the flanges in the cargo area (ie "upper position" of the floor) to be 4 inches, the rough volume of that air gap is 3.25 cubic feet. The reported difference between RWD and AWD cargo volume is 3.1 cubic feet.

coincidence?

I think there is some miscommunication. A lot of ppl are asking for details, specific details and i think they didnt have answers prepared. Im pretty sure that space is used for the extended and empty on the std. Also i wonder where they put the subwoofers?

As for the seats folding flat Palmer specifically said that the seats fold flat.

There is a thread with the speaker layout.

It has nothing to do with the battery. The Select edition only has the smaller battery, and the cargo volume behind the second row seats is listed as 29 cuft for rear wheel drive and 26 for the all wheel drive. The route 1 only has the large battery, and the cargo volume is listed as 29 cuft. The FE only has the large battery and AWD and is listed as 26 cuft

I don't think they would make that kind of a mistake on 3 completely different models

Is the frunk deeper without a front motor? I know the measurement is "behind the rear seat" or something, but I wonder if they can count frunk in that space since that stat is meant to convey the cargo space WITHOUT having to sacrifice any human seating space.

I dunno what else would explain it.

Problem there is they do have a separate line item for the frunk storage space and that is consistent across all models as 4.8 cu. ft.

Hmmm. No idea what explains that discrepancy then. I wouldn't think AWD would affect the rear since all MME have a rear motor. And I agree with other posters that the battery case is supposed to be the same size regardless of what battery pack it contains.

Unless there is a some extra electrical module that is required to link the front to the back on the AWD models. Maybe something related to the IDM?

Maybe, but I can't imagine that would need 3 whole cubic feet. You'll have a PCM or equivalent (power train control module) no matter what. I'd think that the secondary motor would just require a regular wiring harness to talk to it. And any additional high voltage cable from the battery to the front motor would be in front, you'd think. So that shouldn't subtract from rear storage space.

Only other thing I can think of would be some additional cooling/thermal management hardware for the 2nd motor. But again, why would that take up space in back?
