Picked up this article which talks about how Ford mentioned that the Mach E will be RWD in a recent press release. So unless it was a mistake (which seems unlikely since rear wheel drive was specifically mentioned), we may be looking at the first RWD electric vehicle.

If true that further supports that the Mach E will have a focus on performance.

Is Ford’s Mustang-Inspired Electric SUV Going To Be Rear-Wheel Drive?

In contrast to the rest of its kind, which are either front- or all-wheel drive, it appears as though Ford’s upcoming Mustang-inspired electric SUV will be rear-wheel drive.
Last week, Ford announced that buyers of its electric SUV will have access to the FordPass Charging Network that consists of more than 12,000 charging stations thanks to a collaboration with Electrify America in the U.S. and IONITY in Europe.

Hidden within an Electrify America press release regarding the FordPass Charging Network was a sentence stating the following; “Ford will be releasing its all-new, Mustang-inspired electric SUV, that has a targeted EPA-estimated range of 300 miles with an extended battery and rear-wheel drive, in late 2020.”

There’s been a lot of talk about the ‘Stang-inspired SUV, but this is the first time we’ve heard about it being rear-wheel drive and having an ‘extended battery’ option.

The Drive, who first picked up on the statement, reached out to Ford to verify the press release from Electrify America. Shortly afterwards, the press release was updated and gone was any mention of RWD and an extended battery.

It remains to be seen if the variant with 300-miles (483 km) of range will be rear-wheel drive or if it will use an all-wheel drive system. Whatever the case may be, driving enthusiasts should be pleased to know that the crossover should be able to light up its rear tires with ease.

Ford recently shared a video online previewing the EV, busting a number of myths surrounding electric vehicles and confirming that the crossover will be launched in the fall of 2020. There’s also a chance the production model or, more likely, a concept could be unveiled at the LA Auto Show next month.

Interesting reads:

“It's possible the text refers to a way to decouple the front motor, making 300 miles potentially achievable when the crossover's in RWD mode. Or there could be a version that's RWD only.”

“The real point of interest here is that Ford is planning to offer a RWD version of the Mach-E. What’s even more important, though, is that the Mach-E won’t be capable of getting anywhere near 300 miles of range unless you go for the RWD model. Adding another electric motor in the front and an additional draw from the battery means that the Mach-E won’t be able to boast that 300-mile capacity most of the time – unless you opt for the RWD Mach-E, in which point you’ll probably find winter driving in areas that get a lot of snow a real bitch.”

If RWD is available via a mode selection that's a great feature for those of us who live in climates that don't need AWD.

RWD would provide for both more fun driving dynamics and better range! Wish I had an ability on the Model 3 to disengage AWD and go just RWD. This would be a game changer in the current EV market.

The video of Ford running a test vehicle on ice and snow sure looked AWD. Though a RWD only one might be the long range version. AWD as an option for a different trim. Having it switchable will add to the cost.

True but RWD one will also likely have slower top acceleration times due to less traction. All these Teslas and the Taycan can put down such impressive 0-60 mph times because of AWD.

I thought it was the dual batteries that make them faster, not the number of wheels driving. I am confused.

The ONLY reason I'm so hyped on this vehicle is the AWD performance potential of a torque monster with (hopefully) insane 0 to 60 & 1/4 mile performance. To me (IMHO), if this thing doesn't perform, I will be very very let down. If Tesla, and other companies like Jag, Porsche, BMW, Audi etc can provide that kind of performance EV, Ford should be able to as well! Now, being able to switch to just RWD for range/extended range purposes, well that just a major major bonus. Lets hope this is the route Ford is considering.

Ford keeps pushing the fact that it's a "performance" EV so I have little doubt it's going to have awesome 0-60 and quarter mile numbers. But I'm hoping for Tesla and Taycan levels of acceleration, not BMW and Jag, which only hit mid 4 second 0-60 with their i8 and I-Pace EVs. Those are impressive #'s compared to gas powered cars but not in the world of electric vehicles, where you need to be under 4 seconds to really impress :)

Shihear, the base Tesla model 3 is RWD only.
Midnight Blue, the AWD is dual motors not dual batteries.
I'm very excited about the Mach E. I just hope they up their tech game as well. It's going to take more than 0 to 60 times and 300 mile range to compete.

I'm anxious to see if the Mach E is a game changer in any way too. What new or cool tech do you think or hope Ford can bring to the EV table?

It will be RWD with optional AWD and larger battery.
