In preparation for my Mach-E delivery, I ordered a bunch of accessories doing Amazon's Prime Day sale, one of which was the @AOSK Console Dash Storage tray. My wife and I often drive together, and while I would expect the main driver to be using the Qi charging pad in the car, sometimes the passenger likes to have their phone mounted. Unfortunately we didn't like the cheap compression cell phone holders included with the AOSK kit. But since it comes with fairly standard ball joints for the cell phone holder, I wondered if there was a way to plus this kit up with something better. And since we were both upgrading our phones to new iPhone 14-series phones, something with MagSafe and wireless charging would be ideal.
I found that the Belkin BoostCharge Magnetic Wireless Car Charger has a similar ball and socket connection mechanism on the back, where it connects to the vent clip mount. I ordered it and connected the two together, but found that the ball joint is ever so slightly too small ... the charger would not stay upright under the weight of a phone! I refused to concede defeat and decided to MacGuyver a solution. I wrapped the ball joint in a rough layer of scotch tape, enough to add just a little thickness and a bit more friction. That did the trick, and now the holder stays upright!
The charger plugs in via an included USB-C cable. Obviously I need to take delivery of my car before I can fully test this out, but here's a picture of the two together. The USB-C cable will come down off the bottom of the charger, down to the center console.
I've seen some folks tinker with the arms, reversing them so they hang down. I'll have to test this in the car to see if that orientation works. But for now, we're just waiting ... endlessly waiting.
