This weekend was my first time doing my own updates using FDRS. I did all the available updates, except the APIM which is giving me issues. After doing the updates, Active Drive Assist is not available and Intelligent Cruise Control is off and it will not allow me to turn it back on.

I'm guessing that 1 of last few updates that I did (PCM, CCM, CMR and IPMA) caused this? I believe these are part of the updates for Blue Cruise, which I don't have yet because I can't update the APIM.

MY 2-Day FDRS license runs out at 11:00am tomorrow. I'm desperate for any advice that I can get on how I can get Active Drive Assist and Intelligent Cruise Control working again using FDRS.

If I'm able to eventually get the APIM updated, will that fix these issues? Thanks in advance for any help I can get. Hopefully I can get this fixed tomorrow morning and not have to pay for another 2-day license.

Yeah, you need the APIM update along with the other BlueCruise updates you‘ve already done. What issue are you running into with the APIM?

My car got stuck on the 1.7.1 update a while back and has not been able to receive OTA updates since. I brought it to the dealer to have the TSB 22-2150 fix done. When they ran the Module Update Repair, they got this message on their first attempt: (It shouldn't get locked out after 1 attempt.)

"Exception trying to obtain diagnostic files from the backend server required to repair this vehicle. This could indicate the VIN has been locked out."

I got sick of waiting on them and decided to do the updates myself. I got the same message when I tried to do the Module Update Repair (the first step of the TSB 22-2150). I then tried to just do the APIM Update with a USB drive. It loaded the files on it fine. When I plugged it into my car, the installing message never came up on my screen. I've been told that if I leave the thumb drive plugged in, it will eventually install. Could take a month though.

That is the bricked APIM message. You’ll need to replace the APIM in your car. Dealer probably didn’t complete module recovery correctly so it’s locked out permanently.

The service log shows that they were going to update my APIM (Sync module). They were warned that the 12V battery state of charge was at only 66% (vice 80%) and were asked if they wanted to proceed anyway, the tech indicated that he wanted to go ahead. It did not go well and was unsuccessful. Because they let the 12v battery get low, could that have bricked my APIM?

I looked at your history. Module Update Repair was run on June 16, but did not finish successfully. 20 days elapsed without a successful repair, so by July 6th your APIM was permanently locked. It's been in a locked state ever since, so it cannot be updated. It has to be replaced. The attempt you're referring to on Aug 16th would have failed even with the charger on because of the locked APIM state.

Thanks for your help! I'll bring this to their attention tomorrow.

FYI, because so many dealers were dumb and tried to run Module Update Repair without the cables or reading the TSB, there is a long wait for replacement APIMs. Might be several months or longer before you can get one.

I figured as much. Thanks again for your help.

Why would the module go into a locked state after 20 days? That doesn't seem helpful or reasonable.

So the OP has been driving around with a dead center screen since July?

It will still function in the vehicle, it just can't be updated. The 20 day timeout is Ford's cybersecurity decision.

Interesting. So not bricked. More like set in stone? This occurred as a result of something the dealer did? If so, then they should replace the component at their expense. Or Ford should cover it under the warranty plan (assuming the car still has warranty coverage...)

I went to the dealership service department yesterday. I told the guy how the service history shows that they tried to do a module update repair unsuccessfully in August. I then mentioned that because they had waited over 20 days to have me bring my car back to try to update it again, the APIM got locked and that I most like now need a new APIM. The guy didn't really want to hear what I had to say. He just said that I would need an appointment and they will run some tests to see what's wrong with it. He actually seemed irritated, which is funny because I'm the one with a $60,000 car that hasn't had an update in 15 months. lol. I've also dropped my car off 4 different times for multiple days to try and get it fixed, so it can receive OTA updates with no luck. I have another appointment in 2 weeks. Hopefully they will order me a new APIM. In the meantime I'll keep the USB drive plugged in and hopefully the install takes.

I do have a question. Lets say my car eventually does the update from the USB drive. If that happens, will my APIM then be unlocked and fine to receive future updates? Or will it be the same procedure where I have to plug in the USB drive and wait weeks to a month each time?

Driving around with the USB stick in has not been successful for me, and I also have a locked APIM. It seems like it's locked out of updates when this happens. If you got it to work, please let me know. I've been avoiding the dealer like the plague because of the exact situation you described here. Dealers in Austin will let the car sit for days just asking if I have auto updates on, set a schedule, etc. without looking to see if anything else could possibly be wrong. If I take it in, I know I will probably wait 2 weeks before they even come to the conclusion I need a new APIM and then who knows after that?

I had the USB stick plugged in for a couple weeks with no luck. I had an appointment this past Monday for the dealership to see if my APIM was bad (which I had to convince them was the issue), so I removed the USB stick. They called me later that day and said that the APIM needed to be replaced. They ordered me a new one and said that it should arrive in 3-5 business days. I was expecting a couple of months.
