Used a fast charger just to make sure it would work for me not because I needed juice. Was shocked at the cost @ $0.50 a kwh. When charging at home I pay just over $0.07 a kwh. Was also surprised at how slow the rate of charge was. 8 kwh in 13 minuets was around 15% more juice. Fortunately I’ll seldom need to charge away from home. The temperature was 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

This is normal. Fast charging on the road will look a lot closer to gasoline pricing for a full “tank” than charging at home for sure. The DCFC equipment is expensive to build, provide, maintain and to provide energy to power, so that number is just a function of supporting the infrastructure for it on top of profits for the companies providing it.

To me, I think of it as being a lot cheaper to buy food and cook it at home than to price out the same components at a restaurant. There’s a lot more to it at that point.

Also you were only at a 50kW Flo so 8 kWh in 13 min is not too bad.

This is why some states are outlawing per-minute billing on chargers, because it give the chargers all the incentive to charge as slow as possible, and the consumer can't see right away how much they can expect to pay per kWh. Your session looked to be charging at only 37 kW instead of 50 kW, so more money for the operator.

On the flip side, at least in the Northeast of the US, the pay per minute sites are much cheaper than the pay per kW. I suspect this won't last long though.

I hear you. I got duped into charging at an Electrify Canada charger in Merritt BC. $0.57 per minute!

$0.50 CAD = $0.36 USD = very good rate for a public charger!

I pay $0.43 USD - $0.51 USD per kWh at public DCFC in So Calif.

At home I pay between $0.21-$0.53 USD per kWh.

Just depends on who you ask and what electricity costs.

Measurement Canada is "working on it" :)

https://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/mc-mc.nsf/eng/lm04949.html

Right now DCFC is not regulated - it's not even measured(!), which in Canada, where we like to regulate regulations, this is mildly mind-blowing. But it's on the way.

I assume eventually (looks like 2030) all DCFC chargers will be calibrated & periodically tested & measured by Measurement Canada, just like gas pumps today with the little white stickers on the side of the pumps.

Measurement Canada wants to get to the point where you pay for kWh, not time charging.
